According to EA Help, high ping in Apex Legends can come from connecting to a Data Center that is far away or from a problem in your own connection (wireless, a crowded Wi-Fi, background apps, a blocked or distant router). The fastest fix is to pick the closest Data Center from the bottom-left of the launch screen. Before changing anything, turn on Settings > Gameplay tab > Performance Display so you can see your real ping and packet loss. This guide is current as of September 30, 2026, uses only what EA's official pages say, and covers PC only. If you want the same idea for another game, see the League of Legends lower ping guide.
Symptoms, causes and what to check (per EA Help)
| Symptom | Cause EA Help lists | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| Ping above 100 ms and packet loss showing | The Data Center you joined is far away, so data travels farther | Pick the closest Data Center at the bottom-left of the launch screen |
| Every Data Center is high | Many players online or a problem on Apex servers | Check EA server status and issues reported to @PlayApex |
| Wireless connection or many people on one Wi-Fi | Wireless connection, crowded Wi-Fi | Use a wired connection; check router signal and channel |
| Router blocked or far from your PC | Weak router signal, or walls, large objects and microwaves interfering | Place the router in the open and closer, then power-cycle it |
| Many apps running in the background | VPN, file sharing or download managers use bandwidth and processing power | Close them before playing; disconnect the VPN |
| Ping looks low but it still stutters | EA Help says high ping and packet loss both cause lag, so one number is not enough | Watch frames, ping and packet loss together and see which one spikes |
Bottom line: find which value spikes before changing anything
The bottom line is that one ping number is not enough. Work out which of ping, packet loss and frames is spiking before you change any setting. Performance Display also shows frames per second, so if ping looks fine but frames are dropping, the cause may be your PC rather than the network, and the Apex Legends FPS boost guide is the better place to go. If ping and packet loss are both normal but your inputs feel late, that points to input delay, which is a separate topic outside this article and covered in a reduce input lag guide. If ping or packet loss is what spikes, use the table above and the steps below to check your server choice, server status and your own connection in that order.
Steps to lower ping (PC)
- 1Turn on Performance Display — Per EA Help, go to Settings, open the Gameplay tab and switch on Performance Display. It shows frames per second, latency and packet loss. Play one match while watching all three numbers and note which one spikes when the lag hits. Without that note you cannot tell later whether any change actually helped.
- 2Read your ping against EA thresholds — EA says ping is generally between 50 and 150 milliseconds. Under 100 ms the game runs well, under 50 ms is especially good, and over 100 ms you may start to notice lag. Packet loss is the number or percentage of packets that fail the round trip to the Data Center. EA gives no acceptable percentage, so judge it by whether the lag lines up with the moments loss climbs.
- 3Change your Data Center — EA lists three steps. Open Apex Legends but do not select Continue, choose Data Center at the bottom-left of the launch screen, then pick the new Data Center closest to where you are logging in. A far Data Center makes data travel farther, which can cause higher ping and packet loss. The names in the list are shown in the game itself, so check them on screen.
- 4Check server status and @PlayApex — If ping and packet loss are high on every Data Center, EA says it can be many players online or a problem on the Apex servers. Open the EA server status page, look at the Apex Legends entry, and check for issues reported on the @PlayApex account on X. If the problem is on the server side, changing your own settings will not help, so this check saves time.
- 5Fix your wired connection and router — The EA connection article says a wired connection is far more stable than wireless, and that on Wi-Fi you can connect the device to the router with a cable. Keep the router in the open and close to your PC. A Wi-Fi light that is off or red means no signal is being sent. To restart it, power it off, unplug it, wait about a minute, plug it back in and turn it on. Changing the Wi-Fi channel in a crowded building is an advanced change, and EA suggests asking your internet provider if you are not comfortable doing it.
- 6Close background apps and the VPN — EA's background apps article names security apps, file sharing apps (P2P and FTP), download managers, VPNs, proxy or IP masking programs and programs with visual overlays as types that can cause lag. Close file sharing before you play or limit uploads and downloads, and disconnect a VPN before starting the game. On a shared network it is also worth checking that nobody else is running torrents.
If it still is not fixed
- Confirm which value spikes in Performance Display: ping, packet loss or frames.
- Confirm you switched to the closest Data Center and did not press Continue first.
- Confirm there is no outage on EA server status and no issue reported to @PlayApex.
- Confirm you tried a wired connection, router signal and position, a router restart, and the correct date and time on your device.
- If nothing changes, write down the Data Center name, your ping and packet loss values and the time, then contact EA support. Changing DNS is only an option the EA connection article says may help; this guide does not recommend any specific service.
Keeping the lag on video
DOR will not lower your ping, and this guide does not claim it will. What it can do is give you proof of when the lag happened, which is much easier than describing it in words to a friend or a support agent. DOR records Apex Legends full matches automatically and saves them as mp4, but there are no automatic highlight clips for this game, so you trim the part you need with the library's trim tool or DOR Studio and share it as a dor.gg link. On an NVIDIA graphics card, recording uses NVENC hardware encoding, and game sound and your microphone can be captured together, so you can narrate what you are seeing. Recording also uses PC resources, so compare the Performance Display values with recording on. The clip workflow is covered in the Apex Legends clip guide.

The ping thresholds, the Performance Display path and the Data Center steps come from Troubleshoot high ping, packet loss, and lag in Apex Legends, which showed 'Updated 5 months ago' when checked on September 30, 2026. Connection tips are in Troubleshoot your connection to EA games, and live status is on EA server status. The VPN advice and the background app types come from the EA Help article 'How to close background applications to run the EA app'.
