Riot Games does not publish a rank distribution table for League of Legends, so there is no official answer to what percentage of players sit in Gold or Platinum. The only official percentages are that reaching Master puts you in the top 0.2% of players worldwide and that fewer than 1% of players ever reach Master, Grandmaster or Challenger (checked September 28, 2026). Any “Gold is top X%” number you find online is an estimate a tracker built from its own sample. This guide covers the official tier order, the promotion, demotion and decay rules, the 2026 resets and recalibrations that moved the ladder mid-year, and the filters to apply before you trust an outside chart. If what you really want to know is whether you belong higher, rewatching recent ranked games with our League of Legends replay guide will tell you more than any percentile.
Bottom Line: Official Percentages Exist Only for Master and Above
Two statements are backed by Riot. Reaching Master puts you in the top 0.2% worldwide (Ranked Tiers support article, updated May 7, 2026), and fewer than 1% of players ever reach the apex tiers (Apex Tiers support article, updated May 30, 2026). For Diamond and below, there is no official way to turn your rank into a percentile. What Riot has shared is direction. In a /dev post on March 2, 2026, Riot recalibrated how MMR maps to rank: Iron players with a moderate grasp of the game moved up to Bronze, and high-skill Diamond players moved up to Master. In other words, the distribution shifts within a single year. If you want to know whether your rank trails your skill, watch your LP instead of a percentile. Large gains and small losses mean your hidden MMR sits above your visible rank. If you are looking for a partner around your tier, see our LoL duo finder guide.
Official LoL Tier Order and Promotion Rules (Checked September 28, 2026)
| Topic | Official rule | What it means for distribution |
|---|---|---|
| Tier order | Iron → Bronze → Silver → Gold → Platinum → Emerald → Diamond → Master → Grandmaster → Challenger (10 tiers) | Iron to Diamond have four divisions (IV to I); Master and above have none |
| Official percentages | Master = top 0.2% of players worldwide (updated May 7, 2026); fewer than 1% ever reach the apex tiers (updated May 30, 2026) | The only percentages Riot states; Diamond and below are not published |
| Promotion | Hitting 100 LP promotes you to the next division, or to the next tier from division I. Leftover LP carries over, and there are no promotion series | Two players in the same tier can be far apart, so compare division and LP too |
| Demotion | Dropping below 0 LP moves you down a division (e.g., 5 LP in Silver III, lose 20, land in Silver IV at 85 LP) | Tier demotions are protected: you restart at 25, 50 or 75 LP |
| Placements | 5 placement games per queue, losses give 0 LP, and you cannot place above Diamond III even from a higher previous rank (updated May 29, 2026) | Early-season charts look different depending on whether unplaced accounts are counted |
| Decay | Diamond and above only. Diamond: 7 banked days per game, 28 max, 50 LP per decay day. Master+: 1 day per game, 14 max, 75 LP per day | Apex players who decay out of their tier drop to Diamond II |
| Grandmaster and Challenger | At least 400 LP (GM) or 800 LP (Challenger) and more LP than the lowest player in that tier; standings refresh every 24 hours | Each server has fixed caps, e.g., NA Solo/Duo 700 GM and 300 Challenger (updated May 30, 2026) |
| Seasons | Three seasons per ranked year (starting January, April and August per the support article); rank carries over between seasons, and the new-year reset usually starts you about one tier below your final rank | In 2026, Season 2 began April 29 (patch 26.9) and Season 3 began July 29 (patch 26.15) |
Filters to Apply Before Trusting a Tracker's Rank Chart
- Server: Grandmaster and Challenger caps differ by region (e.g., KR Solo/Duo 700/300, JP 100/50), so a global chart may not match where you stand on your own server.
- Queue: Solo/Duo and Flex are separate ranks. Confirm which queue the chart describes.
- Snapshot date: On April 29, 2026, Master+ players in NA, EUW, EUN, LAN, BR and TR were reset to Master 0 LP, while KR was not included. Do not compare figures from before and after that date.
- Recalibration: The March 2, 2026 /dev recalibration moved players across the Iron/Bronze and Diamond/Master boundaries. Check whether the data predates it.
- Sample scope: Tracker numbers are estimates from the accounts they collect. Look for the sample size and whether unplaced or inactive accounts are counted.
- Official cross-check: If a chart's Master+ share is far from Riot's top 0.2%, the sample is probably skewed.
What to Check Before a Season Reset or Placements
- 1Confirm the current season dates — 2026 Season 3 started at 12pm local server time on July 29 with patch 26.15. As of September 28, Riot has not announced the Season 3 end date or the 2027 ranked year reset, so watch the official League of Legends patch notes for both.
- 2Plan placements per queue — Solo/Duo (parties of 1 or 2) and Flex (parties of 1, 2, 3 or 5; a party of four cannot queue) each have five placement games. Placement losses give 0 LP, and you cannot place above Diamond III no matter how high you were before.
- 3Read your MMR through LP swings — MMR is hidden, and LP is the bridge between it and your visible rank. Big wins and small losses mean your MMR is above your rank; the reverse means it is below. Matchmaking aims for roughly a 50% chance of winning for both teams.
- 4Track decay days if you are Diamond or higher — Diamond banks 7 days per game up to 28, while Master and above bank 1 day per game up to 14. Once the bank runs out, Diamond loses 50 LP and Master+ loses 75 LP per decay day, so check your remaining days before a break.
- 5Meet the end-of-season reward bar — End-of-season rewards need 15 ranked wins and Honor Level 3 (support article updated May 14, 2025). The 15-win mission reset when 2026 Season 2 began, so check each season's patch notes to see whether your progress restarts.
Climbing Starts With Keeping Your Ranked Games
A distribution chart can hint at where you stand, but it cannot show which teamfight cost you the LP. DOR is a free Windows app that automatically detects League of Legends, records the full match as an mp4 and clips highlights such as kills on its own. Recording uses NVIDIA NVENC hardware encoding by default and captures game audio together with your mic. When the game ends, open it in the in-app library, trim just the moment you want to review, and share it as a dor.gg link your duo can play in a mobile browser. For the full setup, follow our guide on how to record League of Legends.
