When GTA 5 runs at a low frame rate on PC, Rockstar's official checks come down to three things: apply the latest patch, update your NVIDIA or AMD graphics driver, and verify the game files. Rockstar has not published how much any single graphics option changes FPS, or recommended values for them, so this guide, current as of October 6, 2026, sticks to what its PC support pages say and leaves out so-called pro settings and "+N% FPS" claims. If your frame rate only collapses while you capture gameplay, read why recording drops FPS and how to fix it alongside this page.
Bottom line: no official per-option values exist
Going strictly by the official pages, a low frame rate calls for the latest patch, a current driver and a file check; if error messages appear too, reinstall the Redistributables and confirm your antivirus exception, and if the cause is still unclear, review launcher.log, DxDiag and MSInfo. For DLSS, FSR and ray tracing, only the existence of the options is confirmed, so there is no "lower this value for that many FPS" advice here. If your PC falls short of the Enhanced minimum (GTX 1630 4GB class, 8GB RAM, 105GB SSD), Rockstar keeps Legacy available for older hardware as the official fallback, and if you play and record on one machine and the GPU is stretched thin, how to reduce GPU load while recording covers that side separately.
Order of application: the official checks, top down
- 1Match your edition and your hardware — Compare the Enhanced and Legacy specs in the table with your processor, RAM, graphics card and free storage. Rockstar points to DxDiag for reading system specs, and its requirements page warns that mobile chipsets, integrated graphics and AGP cards may be incompatible and that unlisted specifications may not be supported. On Steam the two editions appear as separate entries, Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced and Grand Theft Auto V Legacy.
- 2Launch with an internet connection — The first item in Rockstar's document is to start the game while online so that the latest patch downloads. Update notes sometimes carry stability and performance entries; the December 17, 2025 section of TU 1.72, for example, updates GTAV Enhanced to DLSS 2.9.1 so Frame Generation works with VSync. None of the notes gives a measured FPS gain.
- 3Update the graphics driver — Install the driver for your card from the NVIDIA or AMD official site. The baseline version is whatever Rockstar's document states; this guide does not copy that number, so read it on the support page and compare it with the driver you have.
- 4Verify game files in your launcher — In Rockstar Games Launcher, open Settings, pick the game under My installed games, then press Verify Integrity beneath Verify game file integrity. On Steam, right-click the game in your Library, choose Properties, open Installed Files and click Verify integrity of game files. Steam says this can take a few minutes, that a few files failing is normal for most games, and that you should avoid running it during heavy tasks such as defragmenting. Epic Games Launcher is also covered in Rockstar's document.
- 5If errors appear, handle Redistributables and antivirus — This applies only when you see Visual C++, Direct3D or DirectX errors. Run the DirectX or Visual C++ installer from the Redistributables folder, by default C:\Program Files\Rockstar Games\Grand Theft Auto V\Redistributables. Then confirm GTAV is an antivirus exception; Rockstar says to disable or remove the antivirus temporarily if you need to rule it out.
- 6Narrow the cause with logs and diagnostics — Open launcher.log in My Documents\Rockstar Games\GTAV. A DxDiag file records your system specs, and the Windows Error Reporting section of an MSInfo file shows crash causes. Rockstar places these last, so treat them as the material to gather when problems survive every earlier step.

After you apply the steps
- I compared the spec table for my edition (Enhanced or Legacy) with my CPU, RAM, graphics card and storage
- I launched the game online and the latest patch was applied
- My NVIDIA or AMD driver is at or above the version Rockstar's document names
- I ran file verification once in the launcher I use (Rockstar Games Launcher, Steam or Epic Games Launcher)
- If errors showed up, I checked the Redistributables install and the antivirus exception
- If problems remain, I saved launcher.log, DxDiag and MSInfo output
If you plan to record GTA 5 while you play
DOR lists GTA 5 as a supported game on PC, and for this title it covers full-match automatic recording saved as mp4. The checks above look at the game's own performance, so how much your frame rate changes once recording is on depends on your PC and no official figure exists. With an NVIDIA graphics card, DOR uses NVENC hardware encoding by default, yet GPU encoding can still add some load, so compare your frame rate in the same spot with recording off and on. It can also capture game audio and your microphone together, which keeps the chatter from an online session with friends. Game-specific details live on the GTA 5 game hub, and the criteria for picking an encoder are in NVENC vs x264.
Official sources checked
The order of checks comes from Rockstar's GTAV PC general troubleshooting article (Last Updated: October 7, 2025), the specs from Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto V PC system requirements (Last Updated: December 10, 2025), and the launcher procedure from How to verify game files in the Rockstar Games Launcher (Last Updated: May 2, 2024), all checked on October 6, 2026. The Steam store requirement boxes for Enhanced and Legacy showed the same hardware values, and the DLSS and FSR facts come from Rockstar's Title Update 1.71 and 1.72 notes. The Steam verification steps come from Steam's support page "Verify Integrity of Game Files" (help.steampowered.com), and Legacy staying available is confirmed in Rockstar's March 4, 2025 newswire post.
