If Roblox crashes or won't launch on your Windows PC, the place to start is the order Roblox's Help Center gives: restart the computer, clear your temporary internet files, check your firewall, then reinstall, trying one step at a time. Roblox does not rank causes, so there is no official most-common cause to blame, and the exact wording of the error message is your best clue. This guide is checked as of October 6, 2026, covers the desktop version on Windows only, and quotes error messages in English exactly as Roblox writes them. If the game also dies while you are recording, crashes while recording covers that side.
Documented symptoms and what the Help Center says to check
| Symptom or message | Cause as described by Roblox | What the documentation tells you to do |
|---|---|---|
| Failed to Load Library (with a DLL file name) | Roblox cannot access a Windows system file (DLL) it needs: missing, corrupted, outdated or blocked. Roblox calls it a client-side issue on your device | Reinstall Roblox, run DISM and sfc /scannow, add the Media Feature Pack (Windows N/KN editions only), then check antivirus and firewall |
| Graphics failed to initialize / graphics card is too old / crash with a graphics error | Listed causes: no DirectX 10 or higher feature level support, graphics drivers that are not the latest, a card Roblox does not support (rare), or changed Roblox graphics settings | Check Feature Levels in dxdiag, update the driver, untick compatibility mode, and use Reset All Settings in Roblox Studio |
| Roblox has crashed due to incompatible software: <path> | Filed under Anti-cheat Messages as incompatible software being detected | Close the software at the path shown, or test with a Windows clean boot |
| Roblox has crashed due to third-party software. / Roblox was stopped. Please ensure third-party software does not interfere with Roblox. | Another program interfering with Roblox | Perform a Windows clean boot, then see whether Roblox runs |
| Roblox cannot run inside of a virtual machine. | Roblox is being run inside a virtual machine. The Anti-cheat Messages page says Roblox requires GPU passthrough to function within a VM, while the Error Codes page says virtual machines and cloud-based computers are not supported | Run Roblox on a regular Windows PC rather than a VM or cloud computer |
| Critical system files are corrupt. Roblox cannot run. Please repair or reset your Windows installation. | Roblox cannot run while Windows is in debug mode | In msconfig, open the Boot tab, Advanced options, clear Debug, apply, and restart |
| Crash when joining an experience or opening a place; endless install loop | Listed causes: Roblox or another program still running during install, corrupted temporary files, a firewall blocking Roblox, other corrupted Roblox files | Reboot, clear temporary internet files, check the firewall, then reinstall, one at a time |
| Roblox has timed out. Please restart your client. | The client timed out | Restart Roblox and contact Roblox Support if it keeps happening |
| Error Code 268 kicked message / Could Not Connect (ID=17) | Not a crash but a kick or connection failure. For 268 Roblox names a network problem between client and server, or a conflict with apps such as antivirus | Reinstall, delete the Roblox folder under AppData\Local, reinstall again, and test another internet connection. For ID=17 follow the General Connection Problems page |
Bottom line: follow the official order, then narrow it down by message
If you have an error message, find the row in the table above with the same wording; if you don't, simply follow the official order. Changing several things at once hides which one worked, which is why Roblox's own page says to try each step one at a time, in order. A Could Not Connect message when joining an experience, or a kicked message, is a different symptom from a crash, so the table separates them. If recording is your goal, make sure the game launches reliably first, then continue with how to record Roblox gameplay.
Work through the official order, one step at a time
- 1Restart and close other programs — Roblox's Help Center asks you to close all other programs before installing or updating and to try a restart first, because Roblox or another program still running during install is one of the listed causes. After rebooting, open Roblox again. If the symptom is gone, stop here instead of changing more settings.
- 2Clear temporary internet files in your browser — The documentation lists corrupted temporary files as one cause of these problems. Use your browser's clear browsing data option to remove cached files, then launch the experience again.
- 3Allow Roblox through the firewall and antivirus — Roblox says a firewall can stop it from starting, and tells you to give Roblox unrestricted internet access in the firewall's program permissions. If antivirus flags Roblox, update the antivirus first, then report a false positive or add C:\Users\(your Windows username)\AppData\Local\Roblox to its exclusions. Turning the firewall off is not something this guide recommends.
- 4Check graphics: feature level, driver, compatibility mode — Press Win+R, run dxdiag, open the Display tab and confirm Feature Levels includes 10 or higher; the page is written for Windows 8.1 and 10. Find your GPU on the GfxCard line under Studio Settings > Diagnostics in Roblox Studio, then install the latest driver for that model from the manufacturer's support page. Right-click Roblox, open Properties > Compatibility, and clear Run this program in compatibility mode if it is ticked. If Roblox Studio opens, File > Settings > Reset All Settings restores graphics defaults, and the page also suggests trying 16-bit color.
- 5Reinstall, and uninstall if needed — A reinstall overwrites deleted or damaged files, so try it first without uninstalling. If that fails, remove Roblox in Programs and Features, restart the computer, then install again. For stubborn cases the uninstall page also tells you to delete the Roblox folder in C:\Users\(your Windows username)\AppData\Local; it says places you saved from Studio are not deleted unless you saved them directly in that folder, so check where yours live first.
- 6Use a Windows clean boot to find interfering software — When the message mentions third-party or incompatible software, Roblox points you to a clean boot. Sign in as an administrator, open msconfig, choose Hide all Microsoft services on the Services tab, click Disable all, then on the Startup tab open Task Manager, disable each enabled startup app, and restart. If Roblox runs normally now, that only suggests a startup program interferes, so do not assume which one; re-enable them gradually to narrow it down. Microsoft Support has the full screen-by-screen steps.
- 7Extra checks for Failed to Load Library — In an administrator Command Prompt or Windows Terminal, run DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth (it can take 10 to 20 minutes), then sfc /scannow, and restart. On Windows N or KN editions, add the Media Feature Pack under Settings > Apps > Optional features. The page then lists deleting the Cache folder in %localappdata%\Roblox, testing a new local user account, and System Restore as a last resort. It never asks you to download DLL files from elsewhere, and neither should you.
Last checks before you contact support
- I copied the exact error message, including any DLL file name, without paraphrasing it.
- I checked my Windows version and build number.
- I am running on a real PC, not a virtual machine or cloud computer.
- After each step I relaunched Roblox and noted whether the symptom remained.
- I tested with my recording app fully closed. If I use OBS, I switched from Game Capture to Window Capture or Display Capture, as Roblox's page advises.
- My support request includes the exact error message, my OS and version number, and the steps I already tried.
Troubleshooting and recording are separate jobs
DOR is a free Windows desktop app that supports Roblox recording: it detects supported games automatically, saves the full match as an mp4 and keeps it in the in-app library. For Roblox that means full-match recording only, with no automatic highlight clips. DOR does not repair crashes, so get the game launching reliably with the steps above first. On an NVIDIA graphics card NVENC hardware encoding is the default, and game sound and microphone can be recorded together, which suits a session with friends. If the game stutters while recording rather than closing, read fixing FPS drops while recording.
Official sources (checked October 6, 2026)
Checked as of October 6, 2026. Roblox revises its support pages often, so confirm message wording and steps at the source. General symptoms are in General Desktop Roblox Issues, the DLL error in Roblox Error: Failed to Load Library, and the exact crash messages in Anti-cheat Messages.
