If Roblox stops you with error code 279 (ID 17) when you try to join an experience, it means what the official help article title says, "Failed to connect to the Game": the Roblox app on your device never managed to open a connection to the game server. The official Roblox Help Center, checked on October 14, 2026, says this error usually happens on PC, Mac and mobile when the client application and the servers have trouble establishing a network connection. Its fix steps are to uninstall and reinstall Roblox, clear the leftover app data, and try a different internet connection. The help article treats 279 purely as a network problem and does not tie it to account moderation. Being removed by an experience's creator is a different code, 267. Error 277, which people often search alongside 279, is a separate message: "Lost connection to the game server, please reconnect." Roblox describes the cause of both in very similar network terms, so the practical difference is in the wording. "Failed to connect" usually appears while you are still joining, and "Lost connection" usually appears after you have already been playing. The help article title lists "279/ID 17" together, but it never explains what ID 17 means on its own. This guide shows how to tell 279 and 277 apart, gives a check order that starts with the quickest tests, and lists the official meaning of the related codes 266, 268 and 280. For every other code, including who can actually fix it, see Roblox error codes list.
Bottom line: 279 is a connection failure before you get in. Check from the outside (service status, internet) to the inside (PC settings, reinstall)
When 279 appears, first decide whether the problem is on Roblox's side or yours. The official Help Center says that during outages or maintenance, joining experiences may be delayed or fail, and it tells you to wait a few moments and try again, and to check the Roblox status page and Roblox's social media for news. If the status page is clear and 279 shows up in every experience, look at your internet and your PC. The "Network-related" step in the official 279 article is to connect to a different internet source and see if the issue persists, then contact your internet provider if it does. The article does not mention VPNs, but in the same spirit you can turn off any VPN or proxy and try again. On school, office or public Wi-Fi, where an administrator may restrict connections, comparing against a phone hotspot quickly shows which side the problem is on. If another connection works, the problem most likely sits in your usual network (your router, or a school or office network), so check that UDP ports 49152-65535 are not blocked on your router and whether a network administrator restricts connections. If no connection works, suspect your PC and follow the official Help Center article on third-party applications and antivirus restrictions: check Windows Firewall, your antivirus exclusions and any third-party programs that interfere with Roblox. If that still does not help, move to the official first step, a reinstall with app data cleared. The official article lists the reinstall first, but because it takes longer, this guide puts the quick checks ahead of it. The official error code page also states that virtual machines and cloud-based computers are not supported by Roblox, so if you are on one of those, try a regular PC. If your dialog shows a code with no official article, such as 529, it is safer to follow a check order like the one in Roblox error code 529 than a guide that claims to know the cause. And if you can join but the game lags or your ping is high, that is a connection quality problem rather than an error, so see how to lower ping in Roblox.
Error code 279 check order (PC first, phones in the last step)
- 1Check the Roblox status pageOpen the official Roblox Status page and look for outage or maintenance notices. It lists services separately, including one called Game Join, so you can see whether joining in particular is affected. The Help Center says that during outages or maintenance, joining experiences may be delayed or fail, and that you should wait a few moments and try again. If an incident is listed, nothing you change on your PC will fix it, so waiting for the recovery comes first.
- 2Try a different experienceCheck whether 279 appears in one experience only or in every experience. Fully close Roblox, open it again and join a different experience. If other experiences work, suspect that experience's servers or that particular join attempt before your whole connection: try again a little later, or join from the experience page instead of following a friend. If every experience gives the same error, move on to the next step.
- 3Switch to a different internet connectionThis is the official "Network-related" step. If you are on Wi-Fi, try a wired connection or a phone hotspot; if you are wired, try a different Wi-Fi network, and join the same experience. If you use a VPN or proxy, also try with it turned off. If another connection works, the problem is most likely in your usual network (your router, or a school or office network), so check the router ports in the steps below or ask whoever manages the network. If every connection fails, look at your PC settings next. The official article says to contact your internet service provider for further help if the issue persists.
- 4Allow Roblox through Windows FirewallThe Help Center tells you to check whether your system firewall is restricting Roblox services. In Control Panel, open System and Security, then Windows Defender Firewall, and use "Allow an app or feature through Windows Defender Firewall" to confirm Roblox is allowed. That list has separate Private and Public checkboxes, so if the result differs by network (for example, a phone hotspot works but home Wi-Fi does not), make sure both are ticked. If it is missing or unchecked, add it as an exception with unrestricted access. If your antivirus includes its own firewall, check that program for blocked Roblox connections as well.
- 5Check antivirus exclusions and router portsAntivirus software sometimes flags Roblox by mistake. The Help Center says to update your antivirus first, and if that does not help, to flag the warning as a false positive and add Roblox to the program's exceptions or allowed list. The Roblox folder to exclude on Windows is C:\Users\(your Windows username)\AppData\Local\Roblox. If you use a router, make sure the UDP 49152-65535 port range Roblox uses is not blocked, and ask your internet service provider for help if you cannot open the ports yourself. The article also names third-party programs that interfere with the Roblox client, such as auto clickers and other game launchers, as a cause of connection problems, so close those too.
- 6Reinstall Roblox and clear app dataIf none of that works, do the official "Uninstall and reinstall" and "Clear App-Data" steps. Uninstall Roblox from Windows Settings or Control Panel, press Win+R, type CMD and press Enter to open Command Prompt. Type cd AppData\Local and press Enter, then type rmdir /s Roblox and press Enter, and answer y when asked to confirm. Restart the computer and install Roblox again. Deleting the app also deletes the screenshots and videos stored in the Roblox app's own storage, so before you uninstall, open Captures in the Roblox menu and use the save icon to export anything you want to keep to a folder on your PC.
- 7On a phone or tablet, follow the official mobile stepsThe official iOS and Android steps are: reboot the device (power off, wait 30 seconds, power on), force close the Roblox app, delete it and reinstall it from the App Store or Google Play Store, check and correct the date and time, and try a different internet connection. The date and time keep your device in sync with the servers, so fix them if they are off. Switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data is the fastest way to see whether your network is to blame. Before deleting the app, export any captures you want to keep to your camera roll.
279, 277 and related connection errors (official Roblox Help Center)
| Error code | Official Help Center wording and meaning | What to do first |
|---|---|---|
| 279 / ID 17 | "Failed to connect to the Game." The client app and the servers could not establish a network connection. It usually appears while you are joining an experience. | Status page, then compare another experience and another connection, then firewall, antivirus and ports, then reinstall with app data cleared |
| 277 | "Lost connection to the game server, please reconnect | Please check your internet connection and try again." Your connection to the server dropped while you were playing. | Try reconnecting, then check Wi-Fi signal and another connection; if it keeps happening, reinstall and clear app data (the official steps match 279) |
| 266 | "Your connection timed out. Check your internet connection and try again." The official article points to connectivity issues such as low bandwidth or internet speed. | Pause large downloads or streams on the same network and compare with another connection |
| 268 | "You have been kicked due to unexpected client behavior." The article says network problems or conflicts with other applications, like antivirus software, can cause it. | Update antivirus and add an exception, then reinstall and clear app data |
| 280 | Your installed version of Roblox may be out of date. | Update Roblox to the latest version or reinstall it |
| 529, 262, 1001 and others | As of October 14, 2026, these codes have no article in the official Roblox error code list, so there is no official basis for their meaning. | Check the status page, wait and retry; if it keeps happening, contact Roblox support as the official error code page advises. Treat guides that claim a cause as unconfirmed |

- You turned off any VPN or proxy and tried another connection (wired, phone hotspot and so on).
- Roblox is allowed in Windows Defender Firewall.
- Your antivirus is up to date and the folder C:\Users\(your Windows username)\AppData\Local\Roblox is in its exclusions.
- UDP ports 49152-65535 are not blocked on your router.
- Before reinstalling, you exported the captures you want to keep to your PC or camera roll.
If 277 keeps dropping you: keep what you played before the disconnect with DOR on PC
One thing first: DOR is a recording app, so it does not fix connection errors like 279 or 277 and it does not lower your ping. Error 279 happens before you even get into an experience, so there is nothing for a recorder to help with there. DOR is useful in the 277 situation, when you get dropped mid-game and do not want to lose what you had played up to that point. According to the official Help Center, the built-in Roblox video capture records up to 30 seconds per video and does not record voice chat or in-experience sound. DOR is a free Windows app that automatically detects the PC version of Roblox downloaded from roblox.com. It starts recording when you join an experience and stops when you leave it, either by going back to the Roblox home screen or by closing Roblox. So even if your connection drops, everything you played before the disconnect stays in the recording file. If you reconnect and return to the same experience, the recording usually continues as one file. If you choose to leave and go back to the home screen, everything up to that point is saved as a single mp4, and your next join starts a new recording. To keep the exact moment the lag spiked before a drop, press F8 (you can change the key) while recording inside the experience to save the last 30 seconds as a clip (choose 15, 30, 45 or 60 seconds). If the drops only happen in one experience, a clip like that can help you show that experience's creator what happened, but recording does not fix the connection problem. For the full hotkey clip workflow, see how to clip Roblox. Game sound and your microphone (with noise suppression) are recorded together by default, and you can trim recordings in the library, export them as 16:9, 9:16 or 1:1, or share them with a dor.gg link. If you join an experience right after launching Roblox, the first recording can start 15 to 20 seconds after you join. If you reinstalled Roblox in the steps above, remember that DOR's automatic recording is based on the PC version from roblox.com. DOR runs only on Windows PCs and cannot record Roblox on phones, tablets or consoles, so if you play on a phone, see how to record Roblox on your phone, and record the sessions you want to keep in full when you play on PC.
