Clipping Roblox means turning a moment that just happened into a short video file: the obby jump you barely made, your reaction to a jumpscare in a horror experience, the round you flipped at the last second in Murder Mystery 2. The catch is that you never know when those moments will come. According to Roblox's official help article, checked on October 14, 2026, built-in video capture works like this: open the in-experience menu, choose Captures, tap the capture icon on the right side of the screen to start, and tap it again to stop, with a maximum of 30 seconds per video. The article does not describe any way to save footage from before you tap, and voice chat and in-experience sounds are not recorded. So to keep that moment with its sound, you need a replay buffer on your PC: a recording that runs in the background and, when you press a key, writes the last few dozen seconds to a file. This guide is for playing the Roblox version downloaded from roblox.com on a Windows PC. It covers four ways to save the last moment, how to pick keys that do not clash, and how to turn the clips you saved into a highlight compilation. If you would rather record long sessions than short clips, see how to record Roblox for longer than 30 seconds. On a phone, tablet or console the PC tools below do not apply, so use built-in Captures or your device's screen recorder there, and use these methods when you play on PC.
Bottom line: turn on a replay buffer before the moment happens
Every tool works on the same principle: the recording has to be running already, so that pressing the key saves the stretch that just passed. Choose based on what you already use. If you have an NVIDIA graphics card and the NVIDIA app, use Instant Replay. If you want to stay with what Windows already includes, use Xbox Game Bar and press the Windows logo key + Alt + G, which Microsoft's shortcut list describes as recording the last 30 seconds. If you already post clips to the Medal community, Medal fits that habit. With an AMD graphics card, Instant Replay in AMD Software does the same job. If you want recording to start by itself when you join an experience, with F8 saving the last 30 seconds while the full recording of the experience is kept as well, DOR fits. With that approach, a moment you pressed too late for, or never pressed for at all, can still be cut out of the full recording. For how a replay buffer keeps the last stretch in memory, read how to save just the moment you saw as a clip. If you are still choosing a recorder by quality, PC load and recording length, the Roblox recording software comparison answers that question. Whichever tool you pick, follow one rule: put the clip key on one tool only. DOR and Medal both use F8 by default, so with both running it is easy to lose track of which one saved the clip.
How to clip Roblox, step by step
- 1Pick one clipping tool and clear the other clip keysDecide which single tool will save your last moments. Running several recorders at once adds load to your PC, and two programs listening for the same key make saves unpredictable. DOR and Medal both default to F8, so if you keep both, change the key in one of them. In the NVIDIA app, press Alt+Z to open the overlay and, in its settings, tell the Instant Replay on/off key apart from the save key; Xbox Game Bar uses the Windows logo key + Alt + G. Turning off the replay feature in tools you will not use keeps things tidy.
- 2Set the clip lengthA replay buffer only reaches back as far as the length you set. DOR defaults to 30 seconds and lets you choose 15, 30, 45 or 60 seconds in settings. Xbox Game Bar takes its background recording length from Windows Settings > Gaming > Captures, the NVIDIA app from the settings cog in its overlay, and Medal from Settings > Clip Settings. A jumpscare reaction or a single comeback fits in 15 to 30 seconds, while a chase or the end of a boss fight, where the build-up matters, is safer at 45 to 60 seconds. Longer clips also mean larger files.
- 3Choose a save key that avoids Roblox's reserved keysRoblox's Creator documentation, checked on October 14, 2026, lists Esc (Roblox menu), F9 (Developer Console), F11 (fullscreen), F12 and PrintScreen as system-reserved inputs that experience creators cannot override. Keep your clip key away from them. Experiences also bind their own keys for sprinting, interacting or switching tools, and those differ from one experience to the next, so confirm the key is unused in the experiences you play most. DOR's default F8 is not on that reserved list. If your keyboard has an Fn key, check whether you need to hold Fn to send F-keys.
- 4Join an experience and confirm the buffer is runningA replay buffer can only save the last moment while it is recording. DOR does not record the Roblox app home or the experience list; it starts after you join an experience. If you launch Roblox and jump straight into an experience, the first recording can start roughly 15 to 20 seconds after you join, so the very first moments may not be saved. Lobbies inside an experience, such as a waiting room or an elevator lobby, are recorded too, so about 20 seconds after you join, press the key once in the lobby as a test before the real game begins. For Xbox Game Bar, open it with the Windows logo key + G and check that the capture widget works; for the NVIDIA app, make sure Instant Replay is on.
- 5Press the key once, right after the momentWhen something worth keeping happens, press the save key once right after the moment and your reaction finish. The buffer saves backward from the instant you press, so pressing too early cuts off the laugh or chat reaction that follows, and pressing too late pushes the start of the moment out of the window. With a 30-second setting, press before 30 seconds have passed since the moment began. DOR shows no notification on the game screen when it saves a clip, so instead of pressing again to be sure, check the library after the experience. Pressing several times gives you several clips of almost the same stretch.
- 6Find your clips and note the experience nameIn DOR each experience becomes one recording in the library, holding the full-experience mp4 and the clips you saved with F8. The library does not label recordings with the experience name; it shows a shared Roblox cover and the recording time, so if you hopped between experiences, jot down which one you played when. Xbox Game Bar saves MP4 files to the Captures folder under Videos, and the NVIDIA app uses the save location set in its settings. Videos from Roblox's built-in Captures stay in Roblox app storage until you tap the save icon, which exports them to your desktop Videos folder so other programs can open them.
- 7Trim the clips and build a compilationOnce you have a few clips, keep only the parts you need and join them. In the trim tool of the DOR library, set a start and end and export at 16:9, 9:16 or 1:1; text can be added only at 1:1. To join several clips into one video, open DOR Studio in your browser with nothing to install, load the videos, put them in order, add text, background music and effect templates, then download an mp4 or share a link. Long gaps between moments drag, so keep just the key few seconds of each clip.
Ways to save the last moment in Roblox (checked October 14, 2026)
| Method | How it saves and default key | What to watch for in Roblox |
|---|---|---|
| Roblox built-in Captures | Choose Captures in the in-experience menu, then tap the capture icon to start and again to stop. Up to 30 seconds. The official help article does not describe saving footage from before you tap. | No voice chat or in-experience sound, and the UI and names above avatars are removed. Videos stay in Roblox app storage until you export them to the desktop Videos folder. Not available in experiences where the creator turned capture off. Works on desktop and mobile. |
| DOR | While you are recording inside an experience, F8 (changeable) saves the last 30 seconds (15, 30, 45 or 60 selectable) as a separate clip. The full recording of the experience is kept too. | Windows PC and Roblox from roblox.com. Recording starts after you join an experience, and the first join can lag 15 to 20 seconds. No in-game notification when a clip is saved, and no automatic highlights. |
| NVIDIA app Instant Replay | Records continuously while it is on and saves the recent stretch with the save shortcut. NVIDIA's app page gives Alt+Shift+F10 as the save key, but Instant Replay also has a separate on/off key and sources list the keys differently. Length is set under the settings cog in the overlay. | Needs an NVIDIA graphics card. Open the NVIDIA overlay with Alt+Z, find the save key in the shortcut list in its settings, and do a test save the first time you use it in Roblox. |
| Xbox Game Bar | The Windows logo key + Alt + G records the last 30 seconds (Microsoft's shortcut list). Length is set in Settings > Gaming > Captures. | Background recording (Record what happened) must be on. Files are saved as MP4 in Videos > Captures. The Windows logo key + Alt + R is a different function that records from the moment you press it. |
| Medal | Records in the background and saves the recent stretch with F8 by default (Medal help center, modified December 12, 2025). Length is set in Settings > Clip Settings. | Same default key as DOR, so change one if you use both. According to Medal's developer page, its automatic Roblox clips come from experiences whose creators added Medal's module, at moments those creators define. |
| OBS replay buffer | Turn on the replay buffer and assign a save hotkey yourself. | Roblox's official help says OBS game capture is known to have issues with Roblox and recommends window or desktop capture instead. All setup is manual. |
Check these before you start clipping
- You play Roblox on a Windows PC, using the version downloaded from roblox.com (this is what DOR is described for; DOR support for the Microsoft Store app, Roblox - Windows, has not been confirmed).
- The clip-save key is assigned to one tool only (DOR and Medal both default to F8).
- The save key does not overlap Roblox's reserved keys (Esc, F9, F11, F12, PrintScreen) or the controls of experiences you play often.
- The clip length suits the moment (15 to 30 seconds for short reactions, 45 to 60 seconds for long chases).
- You pressed the key once in an experience lobby and confirmed that a file actually appeared.
- You played a test clip and checked that game sound and your microphone came through the way you want.
Clipping Roblox with DOR: automatic experience recording plus F8
DOR is a free app for Windows PCs. It detects Roblox running on your PC (the PC version downloaded from roblox.com), starts recording when you join an experience, and stops when you leave it for the home screen or close Roblox. This automatic recording is on by default, and you can turn it off with the Full Game Recording toggle in settings. It records any experience regardless of genre or creator, from obbies and horror to roleplay and tycoons, and each experience becomes one full-recording mp4 in the library. While you are recording inside an experience, pressing F8 saves the last 30 seconds as a separate clip; you can set the length to 15, 30, 45 or 60 seconds and remap the key. Saving a clip does not interrupt the full recording, so a moment you missed can be trimmed out later. Your microphone is recorded by default with noise suppression, game sound is included, and depending on your settings you can capture only Roblox's sound instead of all desktop audio. Game sound and microphone are saved mixed into one track. Quality defaults to 1080p at 60 fps and goes up to 2160p. In the library you can trim clips and export them at 16:9, 9:16 or 1:1, or share them as a dor.gg link. Joining several clips into one video continues in how to merge multiple game clips, and posting them as vertical video continues in how to make Roblox Shorts. Know the limits too. DOR does not create automatic highlight clips of kills or big moments in Roblox (automatic highlight clips cover seven games, including League of Legends and VALORANT), it shows no in-game notification when it saves a clip, and it does not label recordings with the experience name. Roblox on phones, tablets, Mac or consoles cannot be recorded with DOR, so treat this as the option for when you play on PC with the same account.
