To show off the boss your Valheim server just brought down, or a longhouse that took several nights to finish, record with DOR, trim the moment, and send a link. Valheim became a DOR 'full-play recording' game in the October 2026 app update. When you launch the game, DOR detects it and keeps everything from launch to exit as one video. Valheim involves long stretches of chopping trees, mining ore, repairing the base and preparing for the next biome, so the highlights in a night's recording are scattered. This guide covers how to pick out the boss fights, builds and voyages.
Send a single moment, or stitch several together?
A boss fight runs as one block from summon to kill, so one trim is enough. A longhouse or fortress build, though, progresses a little each night, so trimming the start and end of each session and joining them later shows the whole thing from empty ground to finished hall in one video. For joining clips smoothly, see how to merge multiple game clips.
Picking moments from a server session and sending them
- 1Check the recording status before joining the serverIf Valheim is on under 'Full-play recording' in DOR settings, recording starts through automatic detection the moment you launch the game on your Windows PC. Check once before joining your friend's server and the whole night is kept.
- 2Jot down the night as boss, build and voyageThe recording is one file several hours long, so relying on memory makes things hard to find. Notes like 'boss summon about an hour in, set sail about two hours in' let you move the playhead straight there.
- 3Start boss fights at the altarBosses are summoned at an altar, so the group gathering in front of it is the most reliable landmark. Trimming from just before the summon until the boss falls captures both the preparation and the win.
- 4Trim builds each night and merge them in the studioTrim the building stretch every night and let the clips pile up in the library, then merge them in order in DOR Studio in your browser. Adding background music and text such as 'Day 1' and 'Finished' lets server friends follow the progress at a glance.
- 5Keep voyages and new biomes wideCrossing the sea and spotting new land is all about the scenery, so 16:9 suits it. Trim the departure and the arrival separately so you can skip the long sail in between when you merge them later.
- 6Send the result to server friends as a linkVideos from the library trim tool or the studio can be shared as a link. Paste it into your server's group chat and friends play it right away in a phone browser without the app.
Picking Valheim moments by server activity
| Activity | Clue in the recording | How to edit it |
|---|---|---|
| Summoning and killing a boss | The group gathering at the altar to summon | One segment from summon to kill, 16:9 |
| Building a longhouse or fortress | A stretch in one spot where structures go up piece by piece | Trim each night, merge in the studio |
| Longship voyage | Boarding at the dock and the moment new land appears | Departure and arrival in 30-60 s, 16:9 |
| First steps into a new biome | Where the scenery and colors change sharply | 15-20 s around the border crossing, 16:9 |
| Co-op hunt with friends | Several players surrounding one enemy | 20-40 s of the fight, 1:1 or 16:9 |
| A building collapse mistake | The structure sinking after a support is removed | 10 s starting 5 s before it falls, 9:16 |
Before you send
- Valheim is on under 'Full-play recording' in settings.
- I noted roughly when the boss summon, building and departure happened.
- The boss segment starts at the summon in front of the altar.
- Build segments are trimmed in date order.
- Voyages and new biome scenes are cut in 16:9.
- My drive has comfortably more than 20GB free.
- If I need a friend's point of view, I asked that friend to record with DOR too.
How DOR records and edits Valheim
DOR is a free Windows desktop app. Launch Valheim and it detects the game and records until you quit, as one mp4 video. It does not cut boss kills or finished builds for you, so you find the moment in the app library and trim it. The trim tool lets you pick 16:9, 9:16 or 1:1, and tips for start and end points are in how to trim game clips. To join several segments, use DOR Studio, which opens in a browser with no install. It handles trimming length, merging multiple videos, effect templates, text, background music and volume, and you download the result as an mp4 or share it as a link. The studio layout is covered in detail in the DOR browser clip editor. Game sound and microphone are recorded together, so the shouts when the boss goes down stay in.
