Key takeaways
  • Roblox age verification, which Roblox calls an age check, starts in Settings > Account info > Age Group: choose Continue with selfie for facial age estimation, or Continue with ID if you are 13 or older.
  • Without an age check, Roblox uses the birthday you signed up with: under 9 goes to Roblox Kids and 9 or older to Roblox Select, both with chat off. Chat, voice chat, 16+ and 18+ content and games outside those catalogs all need an age check.
  • If your age comes out wrong, accounts 13 and older fix it with an ID, and younger accounts by editing the birthday or through a linked parent. A restricted game message can come from the game's maturity rating, parental settings or your region, not only from a missing age check.

To verify your age on Roblox, open Settings, go to Account info, and under Age Group pick Continue with selfie or Continue with ID. On a computer, Settings is the gear icon at the top right; in the mobile app, tap More (...) at the bottom right and then the gear icon. The selfie option runs facial age estimation through your camera, and the ID option checks your birthday against a government-issued photo ID. Roblox's Help Center, revised on October 12, 2026 and checked for this guide on October 14, 2026, calls this process an age check. If you skip it, Roblox uses the birthday you entered at sign-up: users under 9 are placed in Roblox Kids and users 9 and older in Roblox Select, and chat is off in both. Roblox Kids and Roblox Select are account types for users under 16 that rolled out worldwide in June 2026, built around games that passed an extra safety review. That is why recent questions like chat suddenly not working, or a game you used to play now being restricted, can come down to the age check. On privacy, Roblox's official position is that the images and video used for facial age estimation are deleted after processing and that Roblox does not receive or store biometric data from that process. This guide is written for parents and teens alike: when you need an age check, how to do it, what to try when it fails, what changes afterwards, and what a restricted game message usually means. Turning on voice chat and testing your microphone after the check is covered separately in how to turn on Roblox voice chat.

Short answer: do the age check if you need chat, voice or age-restricted games, and fix a wrong result with an ID or a linked parent

According to the Help Center, an age check is required for chat (experience chat, friends chat and voice chat), unfiltered chat with trusted friends, Team Create collaboration in Roblox Studio, 16+ and 18+ age-restricted content, games with a Content May Vary rating (16+), games outside the Roblox Kids and Roblox Select catalogs, and inviting or being an early tester. If you only play catalog games and never chat, you can keep playing without one. There are two methods. Facial age estimation is open to users under 13 as well, although some regions require parental approval, while ID verification is only for users 13 and older, and a verified status can be undone only once per account. For younger players, voice chat stays unavailable under 13 whatever the check says. Users under 9 need a parent to allow chat in Settings > Privacy & content restrictions > Communication, 9 to 12 year olds need parental permission, and users under 16 need parental consent to turn on direct chat. If you tried to join a game and saw a message that it is restricted or unavailable, start by checking whether the game's content maturity rating is above your account's age group or the level a parent set. The Help Center explains that such games can still appear in search results or ads but cannot be played, and that you receive a message saying the game is unavailable because of the content maturity restriction. The exact wording can vary by app version and language. If a numbered error code appears instead, the cause may have nothing to do with age, so look the code up first in Roblox error codes explained. And if you were blocked while joining through a private server link, server access or a parent's private server setting may be the cause rather than the age check, so see the Roblox private server guide.

How to do the Roblox age check, and what to do when it fails

  1. 1Check the birthday in Account info firstLog in to Roblox and open Settings: the gear icon at the top right on a computer, or More (...) at the bottom right and then Settings (gear icon) in the mobile app. In Account info, look at your birthday and age group. Until you complete an age check, that birthday decides whether you land in Roblox Kids or Roblox Select, so if it was entered wrong at sign-up, fix it first with the pencil icon next to it. Depending on the change, Roblox may ask for ID verification (13 and older) or parental consent. Roblox accounts can be created from age 5.
  2. 2Choose a method under Age GroupUnder Age Group in Account info, Continue with selfie starts facial age estimation and Continue with ID starts ID verification. The button names are worded slightly differently across Help Center pages, so look for the closest match. ID verification is only available to users 13 and older. If you do not see the buttons, update the app and check the same menu on roblox.com. The Help Center also notes that access depends on your account settings and region.
  3. 3Complete facial age estimationRoblox currently works with Persona, a third-party service, to check age. Persona captures a selfie-style video and estimates your age from your facial features. You are then placed in one of these age groups: 5-8, 9-12, 13-15, 16-17, 18-20 or 21+. The images and video are deleted after processing. If you are placed in the 5-8 or 9-12 group, some personal data, including your email address and phone number, is removed from Roblox, so parents should know this if a family email was attached. If your computer has no camera, it is simpler to run the check in the Roblox mobile app on a phone signed in to the same account. Some regions require parental approval for facial age estimation.
  4. 4Review the result and the 48-hour grace periodIf you self-reported as 13 or older but are estimated as under 13, a 48-hour grace period applies before your age group officially changes. If you accept the result, select Accept now under your birthday in Account info to apply it right away; if you think it is wrong, use the next step during that window. If Roblox cannot estimate your age from your face, you will need to complete ID verification. Even after a successful check, you may occasionally be asked to check again if Roblox detects a mismatch with your estimated age.
  5. 5Change a wrong age groupIf your account age is 13 or older, select Continue with ID in Account info and verify your birthday with an ID. Once verified, your Roblox birthday is replaced with the one on the document. If your account age is under 13, click the pencil icon next to your birthday and follow the prompts. A linked parent can also update the birthday of a child under 18, but only once, and not through parental controls if the child has already verified with an ID. If you were placed in an 18+ group by mistake, select Reset under your birthday and age group, then Continue on the next screen to undo the age-checked status. That undo is available only once per account.
  6. 6When ID verification is slow or failsID verification needs a government-issued photo ID such as a driver's license, passport or residency card, and it has to be your own document. If the check stays pending, make sure the photo is sharp and the whole document is inside the frame. Blurry images take longer to process, and documents from some countries, such as those with non-Roman characters, can also take longer. Roblox says age verification is supported in more than 180 countries. When it is done, a Verified indicator with a checkmark appears under your birthday in Account info. Customer support cannot verify IDs manually, remove an existing verification or change your account settings for you, so retaking the photo and submitting it again is the usual fix.
  7. 7For parents: link the account and set content maturityTo manage a child's account you need your own Roblox account with parent privileges linked to theirs, and turning on parent privileges requires you to be age checked as 18 or older. After linking, go to Settings > Parental controls in your account, pick the child, and under Settings you manage choose Content restrictions > Content maturity to set the allowed level. You can open specific games outside the catalog through Allowed games, except Restricted games, and you can block specific games too. If your child has not completed an age check, many communication settings are marked Age check needed and cannot be chosen yet. The same Settings you manage area also has a Facial and ID verification option where you can allow ID verification for your child.

What changes before and after the age check

AreaBefore an age check (sign-up birthday)After an age check (confirmed age group)
Account typeUnder 9 goes to Roblox Kids, and 9 or older goes to Roblox Select regardless of actual age.Ages 5 to 8 are Roblox Kids, 9 to 15 are Roblox Select, and 16 and older get a standard Roblox account. Age bands can vary by region.
Experience chat and friends chatOff, and it cannot be turned on in settings. You can chat with people in similar age groups and with trusted friends. Under 9 needs a parent to allow it, and 9 to 12 needs parental permission.
Voice chatNot available.Available to users 13 and older in games that support voice. Outside the countries on Roblox's official list, ID verification is the route, and the feature may not be offered in some regions. It is off by default, and phone verification does not unlock it.
Games you can playOnly games in the Roblox Kids or Roblox Select catalog that passed the extra review.Kids: Minimal and Mild. Select: up to Moderate. Ages 16 to 17: everything except 18+ games, including Content May Vary. 18 and older: Restricted games too, except in some regions.
16+ contentNo access to games built around sensitive social, political or religious issues, social hangouts without private spaces, free-form drawing or writing tools, or games where players upload screenshots or recordings from other games.Only for users age checked as 16 or older. Parents can allow sensitive-issue games for a child of any age.
Other featuresNo unfiltered chat with trusted friends, no Team Create in Studio, and no inviting or joining as an early tester.Available when your age group and region qualify. Access can still depend on account settings and region.

Check these before the age check

  • The birthday in Account info matches the real one (before the check, it decides your account type).
  • If you are under 13, ID verification is not an option, so use facial age estimation or a birthday correction through a linked parent.
  • For facial age estimation, camera permission is allowed and you are in a bright spot with your whole face in the frame.
  • The ID is your own, the photo is sharp, and the entire document is inside the frame.
  • You are doing the check only in the Roblox app or in Settings on roblox.com, and ignoring verification requests sent through outside sites or chat links.
  • You know that Reset, used to undo an 18+ result or an ID-verified status, works only once per account.
When a game shows as restricted, checking in this order narrows the cause quickly. First, look at the game's content maturity rating on its details page: Minimal, Mild, Moderate, Content May Vary, 16+ or Restricted (18+). Next, check your age group and age check status in Account info. Restricted games are only for users age checked as 18 or older, and 16+ content and Content May Vary games are, by default, only for users age checked as 16 or older. On a child's account, check content maturity and blocked games in the parent account's Parental controls; on a Roblox Kids or Roblox Select account, a game outside the catalog may need an age check or a parent adding it to Allowed games. If you are still blocked, keep in mind that Restricted and Content May Vary games are not offered in every region.

Want to keep sessions with voice chat on video? DOR on PC

An age check happens inside your Roblox account, so no recording program can do it for you or open a restricted game, and DOR does not change your Roblox account settings or age group either. Recording only comes in after the check. If you are 13 or older and want to keep a session where you play with friends over voice chat, Roblox's built-in capture falls short: videos are capped at 30 seconds, and voice chat and in-experience sound are not recorded (Help Center, checked October 14, 2026). If you play the PC version of Roblox downloaded from roblox.com on Windows, the free app DOR starts recording automatically when you join an experience and stops when you leave it, either by returning to the home screen or by closing Roblox. Each experience becomes one mp4 in your library with no length limit, and game audio and your microphone, with noise suppression, are recorded together on a single audio track by default. Automatic recording can be turned off in DOR's settings, and if you join an experience right after launching Roblox, recording can start 15 to 20 seconds after you join. To keep only the funny moment, press F8 (you can change it) while recording inside an experience to save the last 30 seconds as a clip, with 15, 30, 45 or 60 seconds to choose from, then trim it in the library, export it in 16:9, 9:16 or 1:1, or share it as a dor.gg link. Recording whole sessions is covered in how to record Roblox for longer than 30 seconds, and hotkey clips in how to clip Roblox. If a video might include other people's voices, such as friends on voice chat, ask them before you post it. DOR is a Windows PC app, so it does not record Roblox on phones, tablets or consoles.

FAQ

FAQ

Is Roblox face verification safe, and does Roblox keep my face photos?

According to the Help Center checked on October 14, 2026, the images and video used for facial age estimation are deleted after processing, and Roblox does not receive or store any biometric data from that process. The estimation is handled by Persona, a third-party service. For ID verification, Persona captures a photo of your ID and a selfie, and Roblox's Facial Media Capture Privacy Notice says Persona deletes the biometric data within 30 days of collection unless the law requires keeping it longer. Privacy notices differ by region, so also read the one linked on your verification screen. Only start a check from Settings in the Roblox app or on roblox.com, and ignore verification requests that arrive through outside links.

Can I change my age group after the age check?

Yes, but the route depends on your account age. If the account age is 13 or older, select Continue with ID in Settings > Account info; once the ID is verified, your Roblox birthday is replaced with the one on the document. If it is under 13, edit the birthday with the pencil icon, or have a linked parent change it once. If you were placed in an 18+ group by mistake, Reset undoes the age-checked status, but only once per account. Customer support cannot change your age check status for you, so these are the routes to use.

A game says it is restricted. Will an age check fix it?

Sometimes, but not always. Restricted games are only for users age checked as 18 or older, and 16+ content and Content May Vary games are by default only for users age checked as 16 or older, so if your age does not meet the rating, the check will not change the outcome. The exception is a parent's approval: on a Roblox Select account (ages 9 to 15), a parent can add a specific Content May Vary game to Allowed games, and parents can also allow 16+ sensitive-issue games. If a parent set a lower content maturity level or blocked the game in Parental controls, the parent's settings need to change, and some games are not offered in every region. If a numbered code such as 267 appears, the cause may be unrelated to age, for example a ban by the game's creator, so check the code first.
