To get voice chat on Roblox, three things have to line up. You must be at least 13, you must have completed an age check with ID verification or facial age estimation, and the experience you join must support voice chat. Once those are in place, turning it on is just a matter of clicking the headphone icon inside the experience or switching on the Voice Chat toggle in the experience settings. Voice chat is not enabled by default, and phone verification alone does not unlock it. After the age check, voice chat connects you with users in similar age groups. This guide follows the official Roblox Help Center articles 'How do I turn on Voice Chat?' and 'Voice FAQ' as checked on October 14, 2026. It walks through turning voice on for PC and mobile, what to check when the icon is missing or when your voice or other players' voices don't come through, and what voice chat suspensions and the under-13 rule mean. If the age check itself is the part that won't go through, start with how to complete Roblox age verification. Roblox can change these menus with updates, so if a label looks different on your screen, check the latest wording in the Help Center.
Bottom line: no icon means an account or experience issue; an icon with no sound means a mic or device issue
Sorting the problem by symptom narrows things down quickly. If there is no headphone icon or Voice Chat toggle in the experience at all, the cause is on the account or experience side. Check that you are 13 or older, that your age check is complete, and that the experience supports voice chat. Developers decide whether to add voice to their experience, and you can see whether an experience supports it on its Description page. Roblox also notes that if the join voice icon still doesn't appear after you finish the age check, the feature may not be available in your region. The country list in the official Voice FAQ includes the United States, Canada, Great Britain, Australia, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong among many others, and users outside that list are told to use ID verification to enable voice chat. If the icon is there but your voice isn't getting through, look at the mute state of the microphone icon at the top left, the microphone permission Windows or your phone gives Roblox, and whether the mic you actually use is set as the input device. If only other players are silent, check whether they have voice on (a speaker icon above their avatar) and make sure you haven't muted them. And if voice chat works fine but a clip you made with Roblox's built-in Captures has no conversation in it, that's not a fault. According to the Help Center, video captures run up to 30 seconds and do not record voice chat or in-experience sound. Capture problems are covered separately in Roblox Captures not working or not saving.
How to turn on voice chat on PC and mobile
- 1Check your age and age check statusTo turn on voice chat for the first time you need to be at least 13 and have completed an age check. Accounts that haven't done an age check are placed by the age entered at sign-up: under 9 in Roblox Kids and 9 and older in Roblox Select, both with chat off until an age check is done. You can see your status under Age Group in Account info in Settings. Accounts under 13 can't go further here, because neither voice chat in experiences nor voice chat with friends is available to them.
- 2Complete an age check with ID or facial age estimationLog in and open Settings: on desktop it's the gear icon at the top right, and on mobile it's More (...) at the bottom right, then Settings. Go to Account info and, under Age Group, choose Continue with selfie to start facial age estimation, or Continue with ID to verify with a government-issued photo ID. ID verification is only available to users 13 and older. Phone verification is not a valid way to get voice chat. In some regions, facial age estimation also needs a parent's approval.
- 3Pick an experience that supports voiceVoice chat is something each developer chooses to add, so it doesn't work everywhere. Before you join, check the experience's Description page to see whether it supports voice chat. Voice controls only show up inside experiences that support voice, so an unsupported experience won't show the headphone icon even after your age check.
- 4Connect to voice with the headphone iconInside a supported experience, click the headphone icon to connect to voice. You can also open the experience settings (on PC, the settings in the menu you open with Esc) and switch on the Voice Chat toggle. On PlayStation, choose Join Voice in the in-experience settings. Voice chat works on desktop, mobile, VR, PlayStation and Xbox. To disconnect later, switch Voice Chat from Connected to Disconnected in the same settings.
- 5Unmute your mic and test itOnce connected, look at the microphone icon at the top left of the screen. A red slash means your device mic is muted, so click or tap the icon to unmute. When it's unmuted the icon turns solid, and a green graphic moves inside it while you talk. If the green graphic stays still while you speak, Roblox isn't receiving your mic audio, so move on to the device settings in the next step. A red dot on the microphone is not an error; it means Roblox is recording audio.
- 6Check mic permission and input device on Windows or your phoneOn Windows 11, go to Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone and make sure Microphone access and Let apps access your microphone are on. The PC version downloaded from roblox.com is a desktop app, so also turn on Let desktop apps access your microphone. If you use the Microsoft Store app (Roblox - Windows), switch Roblox on in the app list on the same page instead. Then go to Settings > System > Sound and, under Input, confirm that the mic you actually use is selected and that its level moves when you speak. On iPhone or iPad, allow Microphone under Roblox in the Settings app; on Android, allow the microphone in Roblox's app permissions (menu names vary by device). If your headset has a hardware mute switch, check that too.
- 7Mute, block or report others, and what a suspension meansTo stop hearing a specific person, click the speaker icon above their avatar's head or next to their name in the Roblox menu. Muting only affects voice chat, not text chat, and it only lasts for that experience session; click the same icon in the Roblox menu to unmute. You can also block someone, or use Report Abuse and specify Voice Chat. On the other side, if you break the Terms of Use or Community Standards, you may be suspended or removed from voice chat, and further moderation can be applied to your account.
Symptoms, likely causes and where to fix them
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or fix |
|---|---|---|
| No headphone icon or Voice Chat toggle in the experience | You are under 13 or haven't done an age check, or the experience doesn't support voice | Check Age Group in Settings > Account info, and check the experience's Description page for voice support. |
| Age check done, but the icon still doesn't appear | The feature isn't offered in your region, or you are in an experience without voice | Try another experience that supports voice. Roblox says the feature may not be available in your region in this case. |
| You verified your phone number, but voice won't turn on | Phone verification doesn't unlock voice chat | Do an age check with Continue with selfie or Continue with ID in Account info. |
| Connected, but nobody can hear you | Mic icon muted (red slash), device mic permission off, or the wrong mic selected as input | Unmute with the top-left mic icon, then check Windows Privacy & security > Microphone and Sound > Input. |
| You can't hear other players | They don't have voice on, you muted them, or they are outside your age group | Look for the speaker icon above their avatar and unmute them in the Roblox menu. Also check your PC output device and volume. |
| You got a notice that your voice chat was suspended | A moderation action for breaking the Terms of Use or Community Standards | Read the notice for the details and the appeal route. Appeals must be filed within 30 days of the action (6 months for EU users). |
| Captures videos have no voice chat in them | Built-in Captures don't record voice chat or in-experience sound by design | Nothing is broken. To keep the conversation, record on PC with a tool that captures game sound and your mic together. |
Checklist when Roblox voice chat isn't working
- Your account age is 13 or older, and Age Group in Settings > Account info shows a completed age check.
- You did the age check with ID verification or facial age estimation, not phone verification.
- The experience's Description page says it supports voice chat.
- Voice Chat in the experience settings is set to Connected, and the top-left mic icon has no red slash.
- On Windows, Microphone access and Let desktop apps access your microphone are on (on a phone, Roblox has microphone permission).
- The mic you use is selected under Sound > Input, and both the Windows input level and the green graphic in the Roblox mic icon move when you talk.
- The other player has a speaker icon above their avatar, and you haven't muted them.
Keep your voice chat sessions on PC
Roblox's built-in Captures run up to 30 seconds and don't record voice chat or in-experience sound, so keeping a session where you were laughing with friends needs a PC recording tool. DOR is a free Windows PC app that detects the PC version of Roblox downloaded from roblox.com. It starts recording automatically when you join an experience and stops when you leave it, either by returning to the home screen or by closing Roblox, and each experience is saved to your library as one mp4 with no length limit. Recording begins after you enter the experience, and on the first join it can start a little late. Automatic recording is on by default and can be turned off with the Full Game Recording toggle in settings. Your microphone is recorded too by default, with noise suppression applied, and by default DOR captures all of your PC's sound, so the voice chat you hear in your headphones is kept as well, along with any other PC audio such as a Discord call. You can also switch from whole-desktop sound to Roblox sound only; if you do, make a short test recording to confirm the voice chat ends up the way you want. How to record Roblox longer than 30 seconds compares the tools for longer recordings. If you only want the moment the conversation blew up, press F8 (changeable) while in an experience to save the last 30 seconds (15, 30, 45 or 60 seconds) as a separate clip; how to clip Roblox goes through it step by step. Keep in mind that DOR saves game sound and mic mixed on a single track, so you can't lower your own voice separately later. If you need to edit your voice and the game sound separately, OBS can record them to different audio tracks; how to record Roblox on OBS walks through the setup. From the library you can trim a recording and export it at 16:9, 9:16 or 1:1 to share as a dor.gg link, or open it in DOR Studio in your browser to merge clips and add text and background music before downloading an mp4. Get permission before posting a video with other people's voices in it. DOR runs only on PC, so it does not record Roblox played on a phone, tablet or console, and support for the Microsoft Store version (Roblox - Windows) has not been confirmed.
