If you want to record Roblox for longer than 30 seconds, you need a recorder outside Roblox. Roblox's built-in video capture stops at 30 seconds, and the official help article (checked October 14, 2026) does not describe any setting that extends it. The built-in capture also leaves out voice chat and in-experience sound, and it removes the UI and the names above avatars. So the short answer to “how long can you record on Roblox?” is: 30 seconds with Captures, and much longer with a PC recorder or your phone's screen recorder. This guide sorts the tools by one question only: how long can they record? It also covers the storage and folder habits that matter when you want a full 99 Nights in the Forest run or a long obby clear saved as one file. If the capture button is missing or your videos are not saving, start with Roblox Captures Not Working or Not Saving.
Bottom line: anything past 30 seconds needs a PC recorder, not Captures
If you just want one short, silent moment, the built-in capture is enough: it sits in the in-experience menu under Captures and needs no install. Once you need more than 30 seconds, or want game sound and voices, you need something else. If you play on a phone or tablet, use the device's own screen recorder; How to Record Roblox on Mobile walks through it. On a Windows PC you have three main choices. Xbox Game Bar is built into Windows: press Win+Alt+R to start and stop, and recording stops when it reaches the max recording length set in Windows Settings. OBS Studio has no length limit of its own and keeps recording as long as your disk has room, but you set up the video source and audio yourself and press record every time. Roblox's official help says OBS game capture is known to have issues with Roblox and recommends window or desktop capture instead, so follow How to Record Roblox on OBS for the setup. If you'd rather not press anything and want every experience recorded in full automatically, DOR fits that job: each experience becomes one mp4 with no length limit.
How to record Roblox for longer than 30 seconds
- 1Check which device you play onOn a PC you use a recording program; on a phone or tablet you use the device's built-in screen recorder. Consoles (Xbox, PlayStation) follow the rules of the console's own capture feature. The steps below assume the Windows PC version of Roblox downloaded from roblox.com. The built-in capture works on both desktop and mobile, but either way it stops at 30 seconds.
- 2Pick a tool by how long it can recordUse the built-in capture for a single short moment, Xbox Game Bar for a session or two with nothing to install, OBS if you want to control the scene yourself, and DOR if you want every experience recorded automatically. With Game Bar, first check the max recording length under Gaming > Captures in Windows Settings; a session longer than that value gets cut off. OBS and DOR have no length limit of their own, so free disk space is the real limit.
- 3Check free space and the save locationLong recordings are big. File size grows with resolution, frame rate and bitrate, so record about 10 minutes first, check the file size, and multiply the size per minute by how long you expect to play. If you can, save to a drive with plenty of room. Game Bar saves to the Captures folder inside Videos by default, OBS saves to the recording path in its settings, and DOR creates one folder per experience inside its save folder.
- 4Decide what audio to includeUnlike the built-in capture, PC recorders can include game sound. If you play on a Discord call with friends, decide beforehand whether the call should end up in the video. In OBS you add audio sources yourself; DOR records game sound and your mic together by default, and you can switch it to record only Roblox's sound instead of all desktop audio. Other players' voices from Roblox voice chat can end up in the recording, so check before you post.
- 5Get recording ready before you joinIn OBS, press Start Recording and then join the experience. With Game Bar, press Win+Alt+R while the Roblox window is in front. With DOR, just leave it running: recording starts when you join an experience, but if you join right after launching Roblox, the first recording can start about 15 to 20 seconds late. If the opening matters, wait a moment in the experience's lobby or waiting area before you start playing.
- 6Mark the good moments during a long sessionFinding a great moment later in an hour-long recording takes time. Note the elapsed time whenever something happens, or use a hotkey that saves what just happened as a separate file. In DOR, pressing F8 saves the last 30 seconds as a separate clip alongside the full recording, and Game Bar and OBS have their own ways to save the last stretch (background recording and the replay buffer).
- 7Keep only what you need afterwardsWhen the session ends, trim out the parts you'll actually use instead of piling up raw files, then decide whether to keep the original. For a long YouTube video, cut the waiting at the start and end; for Shorts, cut a 9:16 section. If you won't use the original again, deleting it after trimming frees up a lot of space.
Max recording length by tool (checked October 14, 2026)
| Tool | Max length and how it starts | Sound, save location and caveats |
|---|---|---|
| Roblox built-in capture (video) | Up to 30 seconds. Open the in-experience menu, select Captures, then tap the capture icon on the right side of the screen to start; tap it again to stop. | No voice chat or in-experience sound, and the UI and avatar names are removed. Videos stay in Roblox app storage until you tap the save icon, which exports them to the Videos folder on desktop. Not available in experiences where the developer turned capture off. |
| Roblox Moments (beta) | Posts a 30-second clip you captured, after you trim it. It does not make recordings longer. | 13+ only, up to 10 uploads per day, and you can't upload external files. |
| Xbox Game Bar (built into Windows) | Up to the max recording length set under Gaming > Captures in Windows Settings. Press Win+Alt+R to start and stop. | Nothing to install. Saves to the Captures folder inside Videos by default. A session longer than the max length stops partway, so check the setting first. |
| OBS Studio | No length limit of its own (until the disk fills up). You start and stop recording yourself. | Roblox's official help recommends window or desktop capture instead of game capture. You add audio sources yourself, and turning on automatic file splitting makes long recordings easier to handle. |
| DOR (free Windows app) | Records each experience automatically, with no length limit. Starts when you join, ends when you leave. | Records game sound and your mic together. Works with the PC version from roblox.com, and the first recording can start 15 to 20 seconds late. |
| Phone or tablet screen recorder | The device's own screen recorder is not bound by the 30-second capture limit (it runs until storage fills up). | Whether game sound and your mic are included depends on the device and its settings. DOR is PC-only, so it can't record on phones. |
Check before you record a long session
- You know the built-in capture stops at 30 seconds, and you have another tool ready for anything longer.
- If you use Game Bar, the max recording length in Windows Settings is longer than you expect to play.
- The drive you save to has enough free space for the whole session (you checked the size per minute with a test recording).
- You've decided whether to include game sound, your mic and your Discord call.
- If you use OBS, you've tested that window or desktop capture, not game capture, picks up the Roblox screen.
- If you use DOR, you launched the PC version from roblox.com and the Roblox full-game recording toggle is on in DOR's settings.
- You've arranged your screen so other windows won't cover Roblox while you record.
Keep a whole experience with no length limit using DOR
DOR is a free Windows PC app. It automatically detects the PC version of Roblox downloaded from roblox.com, starts recording when you join an experience, and stops when you leave it for the Roblox home screen or close Roblox. This automatic recording is on by default and can be turned off with the Roblox full-game recording toggle in settings. It records any experience regardless of genre or creator, and each experience becomes one full mp4 in your library, so the whole experience is kept without the 30-second limit of the built-in capture. Moving to a different experience starts a new recording, and teleports between servers inside the same experience usually continue in the same file. It does not record the Roblox home screen or menus such as the avatar shop, and if you join an experience right after launching Roblox, the first recording can start about 15 to 20 seconds late. Game sound and your mic are recorded together by default, with noise suppression on the mic. Quality defaults to 1080p at 60fps and goes up to 2160p. When something great happens in a long session, press F8 (you can change the key) to save the last 30 seconds as a separate clip (you can pick 15, 30, 45 or 60 seconds), so you don't have to dig through the long original later; How to Clip Roblox covers this in detail. From the library you can trim the parts you need and export them as 16:9, 9:16 or 1:1 to share as a dor.gg link, or bring them into DOR Studio in your browser to combine videos and add text and background music before downloading an mp4. DOR Studio accepts videos up to 500MB each, so trim a long original in the library first. If long recordings are eating your disk, see How to Reduce Game Recording File Size. DOR can't record Roblox on phones, tablets or consoles, so treat it as the option for when you play on PC. Support for the Microsoft Store version (Roblox - Windows) has not been confirmed.
