On Roblox for PC, the Help Center points to three main things: switch Graphics Mode to Manual and slide Graphics Quality toward performance (left), close other heavy apps, and, if graphics errors or texture glitches also appear, check your graphics driver and DirectX feature level. Everything below comes from Roblox's own Help Center, checked on October 6, 2026, and covers Windows PC only (not mobile or console). The Help Center gives no FPS gains and no slider step counts, so this guide does not invent any. If frames only drop while you are recording, read fixing FPS drops while recording first.
The short answer: the slider only addresses graphics lag
Roblox's Help Center splits lag into three kinds: Network Lag, Graphics Lag and System Lag. Choppy, stuttering visuals mean Graphics Lag; no improvement after lowering graphics means System Lag; other players warping unpredictably means Network Lag. The first two can be handled with the order below, while the third is a connection problem with its own article. If you want footage to compare before and after a change, see how to record Roblox gameplay.
Order to apply the changes
- 1Identify the lag type — Decide what you actually see inside the experience. Choppy visuals and stuttering point to Graphics Lag, while other players warping or actions taking a long time point to Network Lag. If it is graphics, continue with the next steps; if it is network, jump to the last step.
- 2Switch Graphics Mode to Manual — During play, press Esc (or click the Roblox logo at the top left), open the Settings tab and change Graphics Mode from Automatic to Manual. Drag the Graphics Quality slider left for better performance or right for better graphics, then click Resume. Move it in small steps and compare in the same spot. The Help Center only says a lower level trades some visual quality for less load on your device. Labels can vary by version: the lag article calls this the Graphics Quality - Auto toggle.
- 3Close other heavy apps — If lowering graphics changes nothing, the Help Center treats it as System Lag and tells you to close other heavy apps. It does not list which apps, so pick the programs you know are demanding and shut them before testing again. If that still fails, the article suggests upgrading or using a more powerful device.
- 4Check the driver and DirectX level — Come here only when graphics errors or texture glitches show up too. Press Windows key + R, run dxdiag and look for DirectX 10 or higher under Feature Levels, then update your graphics driver from the maker's support page, such as NVIDIA, AMD or Intel. That article covers graphics errors rather than frame rate, so it does not promise a gain. If a message such as graphics failed to initialize appears, follow the official Graphics Problems article.
- 5Handle network lag and heavy experiences separately — Players warping is a connection issue, and the slider will not change it. The General Connection Problems article names firewalls as a very frequent cause and walks through a wired connection and opening UDP ports 49152-65535, among other steps. Also, scripts or objects that are excessive in an experience can only be fixed by its creator, so a single heavy experience may not respond to player settings.

| What you see | What to do and which way | Official source (last updated) |
|---|---|---|
| Choppy, stuttering visuals (Graphics Lag) | In Settings, set Graphics Mode to Manual and move the Graphics Quality slider left, toward performance | Reduce Lag article and Graphics Quality article (updated 2026-09-28) |
| No change after lowering graphics (System Lag) | Close other heavy apps; if that fails, consider upgrading or using a stronger device | Reduce Lag article (updated 2026-09-28) |
| Other players warp or actions take long (Network Lag) | Not a graphics setting: check the connection, try a wired link, review firewall and router | General Connection Problems article (updated 2026-10-04) |
| Graphics card error text or texture glitches appear | Check DirectX Feature Levels with dxdiag and update the graphics driver | Graphics Problems on Computers article (updated 2026-09-29) |
| Still limited after every setting | Compare with the official recommendation: dedicated-GPU PC under 5 years, integrated-graphics laptop under 3 years | Hardware and Operating System Requirements article (updated 2026-10-05) |
Final check
- Graphics Mode is Manual and the slider has been moved left.
- I retested the same spot with other heavy apps closed.
- I separated one heavy experience from every experience being slow.
- dxdiag shows DirectX 10 or higher under Feature Levels.
- The graphics driver is current from the maker's support page.
- I compared my PC with the official recommended hardware age (under 5 years with a dedicated GPU, under 3 years for an integrated-graphics laptop).
If you record while you tune
DOR is a Windows app that automatically records full Roblox matches and saves them as mp4. For Roblox it records the full match only, with no automatic highlight clips. On a PC that already lags, recording can add extra load, so it is safer to finish the settings above before leaving it on. On an NVIDIA graphics card, NVENC hardware encoding is the default, which hands encoding to the card, and game sound and microphone are captured together so you can narrate the moment a lag spike hit. DOR does not raise your frame rate and no numbers are claimed here. For comparison, the Captures feature in the Roblox menu stops at 30 seconds and leaves out the experience's sound. Cut the scenes you need with the in-app library trim or DOR Studio in the browser and share them as a dor.gg link. See what is supported on the DOR Roblox page, and continue with reducing GPU load while recording.
