Key takeaways
  • Roblox's help center has no article dedicated to black screens. The closest one, Graphics Problems on Computers, points to missing DirectX 10 feature level support, outdated graphics drivers and changed Roblox graphics settings (checked October 14, 2026).
  • When it goes black decides where to look: one experience only points to that experience, every experience points to your PC's graphics, and black only after alt-tabbing points to the fullscreen switch.
  • If the game looks fine but the recording is black, the capture method is the problem. In OBS, use Window Capture or Display Capture instead of Game Capture; with DOR, don't minimize or cover the Roblox window while recording.

A Roblox black screen has more than one cause, so the fastest fix starts with when the screen goes dark. Does it stay black right after you join an experience, turn black only when you alt-tab back in, start after a Windows 11 update, or does the game look normal while only your recording comes out black? Each case points somewhere different. As of October 14, 2026, Roblox's help center has no article named after black screens. The closest is Graphics Problems on Computers, which lists four causes: a PC without DirectX 10 or higher feature level support, out-of-date graphics drivers, a graphics card Roblox does not support (which it calls rare), and Roblox graphics settings the player has changed. It suggests trying fixes one step at a time: resetting Roblox graphics, checking the DirectX feature level, lowering display color quality, upgrading the graphics driver and checking compatibility mode. The official articles say nothing about a fullscreen shortcut or about Windows 11 HDR and GPU selection, so this guide treats those as Windows-side checks and labels them that way. If a window with an error number appears along with the black screen, that number is the better clue, so look it up first in Roblox error codes explained. Below you will find where to start for each symptom, the order in which to work through Roblox's steps and the Windows settings, and what to change when only the recording is black. Crashes and Roblox refusing to launch at all are a separate problem; this guide covers Roblox running while the screen stays black.

Bottom line: first decide whether the game or only the recording is black

Start by checking whether Roblox is black while you are looking at it, or only when you open the recording afterward. If the game screen itself is black, switching recording software will not help, so work through Roblox and your PC in the order below. Even then, the key split is one experience versus all of them. If only one experience goes black, suspect its loading or a recent update and compare it with another experience. If every experience is black, follow the order in the official Graphics Problems on Computers article: put graphics settings back, check the DirectX feature level, update the driver and clear compatibility mode. If it only happens after alt-tabbing or switching to fullscreen, compare in windowed mode; if it only happens on Windows 11, check Windows settings such as HDR and which GPU Roblox runs on. If the game looks fine but the recording is black, the recording method is at fault. Roblox's Anti-cheat Messages help article says OBS in-game capture is known to have issues with Roblox and asks you to use window or desktop capture instead. For setting OBS up from scratch, see How to Record Roblox With OBS; if OBS records black in other games too, see OBS black screen fixes, in order. Whichever path you are on, change one thing at a time and test before moving on, or you will not know what actually fixed it.

How to fix a Roblox black screen, step by step

  1. 1Wait, then compare with another experienceIf the screen is black right after joining, give it a minute or two first. Some experiences load a lot of map data and assets before anything appears, and some deliberately start on a dark intro. If it stays black, open the menu with ESC and leave, then join another experience that normally works for you. If that one looks fine, the first experience's update or server state is the likely cause, so try again later or check that experience's own announcements. If every experience is black in the same way, treat it as a graphics problem on your PC and move on to the next step.
  2. 2Set Graphics Mode back to AutomaticThe official article lists changed Roblox graphics settings as a cause. Inside an experience, click the Roblox logo in the upper-left corner or press ESC, open the Settings tab at the top, set Graphics Mode to Automatic and select Resume. If you were already on Manual, drag the Graphics Quality slider a few notches to the left and see whether the picture comes back. The official reset step for Roblox graphics is done from Roblox Studio's settings and only applies if Roblox still launches, so if you don't use Studio, putting Graphics Mode back to Automatic is the closest equivalent. If the screen is so black that even the menu does not show, skip ahead to the driver check.
  3. 3Turn off fullscreen and compare in a windowIf the screen only goes black after you alt-tab to another window or switch to fullscreen, the fullscreen switch is the likely trigger. Roblox's help center does not document a fullscreen shortcut (checked October 14, 2026). On the Developer Forum, players report that on the Windows client F11, Alt+Enter and the fullscreen option in the settings menu all switch to borderless fullscreen, so press F11 once to go windowed and see whether the picture returns. If windowed mode works, you can drag the window edges to make it larger and play that way, or go back to fullscreen and alt-tab less often. If it is black in a window too, fullscreen is not the cause, so move on to the driver check.
  4. 4Check the DirectX feature level and graphics driverThe official article says your PC needs DirectX 10 or higher feature level support. Press Windows+R, run dxdiag, open the Display tab and look for a value of 10 or higher (for example 11_0 or 12_1) on the Feature Levels line. The same tab shows your graphics card's name, so download the latest driver for that card from the manufacturer's support page (NVIDIA, AMD or Intel) and install it. Next, right-click the Roblox Player shortcut on your desktop, choose Properties, open the Compatibility tab and clear 'Run this program in compatibility mode for' if it is ticked. The official article also suggests lowering display color depth to 16-bit as a test; if your version of Windows does not offer that option, you can skip it.
  5. 5On Windows 11, check HDR and which GPU Roblox usesRoblox's official articles say nothing about Windows 11 HDR or PCs with two graphics processors, so from here on the checks follow Microsoft's Windows settings. If HDR is on under Settings > System > Display, turn it off for a moment and relaunch Roblox. On a PC with both integrated and dedicated graphics, such as many laptops, go to Settings > System > Display > Graphics, select Roblox under Custom options for apps, choose Options and set it to High performance. If Roblox is not listed, add RobloxPlayerBeta.exe yourself from the folder whose name starts with 'version-' inside AppData > Local > Roblox > Versions; that version- folder name changes when Roblox updates, so you may need to add it again later. The same Options panel has Optimizations for windowed games, which Microsoft describes as changing how DirectX 10 and 11 games present frames in windowed and borderless modes. If the black screen after alt-tabbing started after a Windows update, try turning it off for Roblox alone and compare. Auto HDR has to be off before you can turn that switch off. Fully close and reopen Roblox after each change.
  6. 6Close other programs, and reinstall lastClose recorders, overlays, screen filters and anything else that draws over or hooks into Roblox, then relaunch. Roblox's Anti-cheat Messages article asks you to make sure third-party software does not interfere with Roblox and names OBS in-game capture as a known problem. If nothing changes, follow the order in the official General Desktop Roblox Issues article: restart the PC, clear your browser's temporary internet files, make sure your firewall is not blocking Roblox, and then reinstall Roblox. The official reinstall guide says to close all other programs while reinstalling, and if a reinstall does not help, to uninstall, restart the PC and then install again.
  7. 7If only the recording is black, change the capture methodIf the game looks normal but the video is black, it is the recording setup that needs fixing, not Roblox. In OBS, delete the Game Capture source and capture the Roblox window with Window Capture; if that is black too, record the whole monitor with Display Capture. Display Capture records everything on that screen, so close chat windows and silence notifications first. If you recorded with DOR and only part of the video is black, check whether Roblox was minimized or covered by another window during that stretch, because DOR is designed to black out those sections on purpose. A quick 10-second test recording that you open right away is the fastest way to confirm a fix.

Black screen checklist

  • I joined a different experience to see whether the black screen happens in one experience or in all of them.
  • In the ESC menu's Settings tab, I set Graphics Mode back to Automatic or lowered Graphics Quality.
  • I switched to windowed mode (F11 or similar) to rule out the fullscreen switch.
  • dxdiag shows a feature level of 10 or higher, my graphics driver is the manufacturer's latest, and compatibility mode is off.
  • On Windows 11, I also tested with HDR off and Roblox set to High performance.
  • If only the recording was black, I used Window or Display Capture instead of OBS Game Capture and kept the Roblox window uncovered while recording.
If you change several settings at once, you won't know which one worked or what to undo when the problem comes back. The official article also says to try the steps one at a time, so after each change fully close Roblox, reopen the same experience and note the result. If the black screen started right after a graphics driver update, rolling back to the previous driver to compare is also worth a try.

When the recording is black, and where DOR fits

One thing first: if the Roblox screen itself is black, any recorder will capture that black screen, so get the game picture back with the steps above before choosing how to record. If you play Roblox on a Windows PC, the free DOR app can record your experiences. DOR automatically detects the PC version of Roblox downloaded from roblox.com, starts recording when you join an experience, and stops when you leave the experience for the home screen or close Roblox. It is on by default and can be turned off in settings. Any experience is recorded, and each experience becomes one full-length mp4 in your library. Game sound and your mic, with noise suppression, are recorded together by default. Two things matter when a DOR recording looks black. First, DOR records only the Roblox window area and is designed to black out any stretch where the Roblox window is minimized or covered by another window. If Discord or a browser sits on top of Roblox while you record, that stretch may come out black, so keep the Roblox window in front and don't let other windows overlap it. Second, if you join an experience right after launching Roblox, the first recording can start 15 to 20 seconds after you join, so a few seconds right after the loading screen may be missing. That is a later start, not a black screen. If a black screen flickers in and out, press F8 (you can change it) while recording inside the experience, just after it happens, to save the last 30 seconds as a separate clip (15, 30, 45 or 60, your choice), so you can replay exactly when it occurs. More on hotkey clips is in How to Clip Roblox. Recordings can be trimmed in the library, exported at 16:9, 9:16 or 1:1, or shared as a dor.gg link. DOR is Windows PC only, so it cannot record Roblox on phones, tablets or consoles.

FAQ

FAQ

What is the Roblox fullscreen shortcut?

Roblox's help center does not document a fullscreen shortcut (checked October 14, 2026). Developer Forum posts say that on the Windows client F11, Alt+Enter and the fullscreen option in the in-experience settings menu all switch to the same borderless fullscreen, but no official article confirms this. If the keys do nothing, open the menu with ESC and look for a fullscreen option in the Settings tab.

What if Roblox is black right after launch, before I join any experience?

If the screen is already black at the login screen or on the home screen, you can't open the in-experience menu, so skip the Graphics Mode step and start with the dxdiag feature level, your graphics driver and compatibility mode. On Windows 11, also compare with HDR off and Roblox set to High performance. If nothing changes, follow the official General Desktop Roblox Issues order: restart the PC, clear your browser's temporary internet files, check your firewall, then reinstall. If Roblox closes by itself or won't start at all, that is a crash or launch problem rather than a black screen, so check the error message or error code first.

Do these fixes work on a Mac or a phone?

The dxdiag, compatibility mode and Windows graphics steps in this guide are for Windows PCs, and the official Graphics Problems on Computers article is written mostly for Windows too. Per the official requirements, a Mac needs macOS 10.13 (High Sierra) or later, and phones need iOS or iPadOS 14 or later, or Android 8.0 or later with OpenGL ES 3.0, so check that first. Comparing with another experience and updating the app still apply. DOR is Windows PC only and cannot record Roblox on a Mac or phone, so treat it as an option for when you play on a PC.
