The first thing that trips people up when they record Roblox on OBS is the source. Add Game Capture the way you would for most PC games, and you often get a black preview or a source that never hooks. That is not just a settings mistake. Roblox's help center article on anti-cheat messages lists a message saying OBS in-game capture is known to have issues with Roblox and asking players to use window or desktop capture instead, and explains that it means Roblox doesn't support OBS's in-game capture feature (checked October 14, 2026). OBS agrees: from version 31.1, picking Roblox in a Game Capture source shows a warning that Roblox cannot be captured with Game Capture and that you should use Window Capture or Display Capture. So the short answer is simple: use OBS Window Capture on the [RobloxPlayerBeta.exe]: Roblox window, and fall back to Display Capture of the whole monitor if that window will not show. Roblox also has a built-in way to take videos through Captures in the in-experience menu, but according to the help center a video capture runs up to 30 seconds, and voice chat and other in-experience sounds are not recorded. We cover those limits and the other ways to record for longer in how to record Roblox for longer than 30 seconds. This guide is for people who already use OBS or plan to. It walks through a Roblox-specific source setup, game audio and microphone, 1080p 60fps encoder values, a table of black screen and lag fixes, and how to save the moment you just played with the Replay Buffer. Menu names follow the English interface of OBS 32, and the window name assumes the Roblox player installed from roblox.com.
Bottom line: Window Capture instead of Game Capture, Display Capture as the fallback
If you record Roblox with OBS, Window Capture comes first. It grabs only the Roblox window, so Discord pop-ups and other windows stay out of the video, and it follows the Roblox window if you move it to another monitor. Set its capture method to Windows 10 (1903 and up), which some OBS versions label Modern (WGC); the OBS knowledge base lists Windows 10 version 1903 or later and OBS 27 or later for this method. If Window Capture keeps showing black, Display Capture of the whole monitor is the next step, and it is also the method Roblox's help center walks through step by step. Everything on that screen gets recorded, so close chat windows and turn off notification pop-ups first. Game Capture is the method both Roblox's help center and OBS tell you to avoid for Roblox, so leave it out. OBS suits people who want to build the scene themselves: adding a webcam, streaming and recording at once, or splitting game audio and mic into separate tracks for editing. For what each output and encoder value means, see the complete guide to OBS game recording settings, and for black screens that happen outside Roblox too, see OBS black screen fixes, in order. If you would rather not press record and line up sources for every experience, the DOR section below covers an app that starts recording automatically when you join an experience.
Recording Roblox on OBS, step by step
- 1Set OBS to 1080p and 60fpsUpdate OBS to the latest version. In Settings → Video, set Base (Canvas) Resolution and Output (Scaled) Resolution to 1920x1080 and Common FPS Values to 60. Even on a 1440p or 4K monitor, scaling the recording down to 1080p keeps file size and load lower. In Settings → Output, switch Output Mode to Advanced so you can choose the encoder and format on the Recording tab. On the Roblox side, the Maximum Frame Rate option in the in-game settings defaults to 60 FPS, and the official choices are 60, 120, 144 and 240. You can run the game at 120 or higher and still record at 60fps without any problem.
- 2Add Window Capture on the Roblox windowLaunch Roblox and join an experience first, then click + in the OBS Sources dock and add Window Capture. Pick [RobloxPlayerBeta.exe]: Roblox from the window list and set Capture Method to Windows 10 (1903 and up). Some OBS versions call this method Modern (WGC). OBS warns that Roblox cannot be captured with the BitBlt method, so picking the Windows 10 method by hand is more reliable than leaving it on Automatic. With this method, Client Area is on by default, so the window border and title bar are left out. Turn off Capture Cursor if you do not want the mouse pointer in the video. If the preview looks small, right-click the source and choose Transform → Fit to screen (Ctrl+F). With the default Window Match Priority (match title, otherwise find window of the same type), OBS finds the same window again after you restart Roblox.
- 3Capture only the game soundOn OBS 30.1 or later, open the properties of that Window Capture and turn on Capture Audio (BETA); Roblox's sound then travels with the source. On older versions, add Application Audio Capture (BETA) and select the same Roblox window. That source needs OBS 28 or later on Windows 10 version 2004 or later, or Windows 11. If you use either one, disable or mute Desktop Audio in Settings → Audio; OBS recommends this so the same sound is not recorded twice. If you want Discord calls and music in the recording as well, skip the Roblox-only source and keep Desktop Audio on instead.
- 4Record your microphoneIn Settings → Audio, set Mic/Auxiliary Audio to the microphone you actually use. In the Audio Mixer, click the gear next to the mic, open Filters and add Noise Suppression to cut keyboard and fan noise. If you want to adjust your voice separately when editing, enable several audio tracks under Output → Recording and assign game audio and mic to different tracks in Advanced Audio Properties. Other players' voices that you hear through Roblox voice chat can end up in the recording too, so think about their consent before you publish a video with their voices in it.
- 5Pick the encoder and file formatOn the Output → Recording tab, choose your graphics card's hardware encoder: NVIDIA NVENC, AMD or Intel QuickSync. The x264 software encoder shares the CPU with the game and tends to cause stutter. Set Rate Control to CQP (Constant QP) and start around 20; lower numbers raise both quality and file size. For Recording Format, you can keep Hybrid MP4, the default for new profiles since OBS 32; it is designed to hold up better if OBS crashes mid-recording. If an older profile still records to MKV, convert the files with File → Remux Recordings.
- 6Save clips with the Replay Buffer and run a testTo keep only the good moments instead of recording everything, open Settings → Output → Replay Buffer, turn on Enable Replay Buffer and set Maximum Replay Time to about 30 seconds. Assign a key to Save Replay in Settings → Hotkeys, then click Start Replay Buffer in the Controls dock. Each press of that key now saves the last stretch of gameplay to a file. Choose a key that does not clash with the movement or ability keys of the experiences you play. Finally, make a one-minute test recording and check that the picture is not black, that both game sound and your voice are there, and that the file opens before you record for real.
Roblox on OBS: troubleshooting table
| Symptom | Common cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Game Capture shows black or never hooks | Roblox's help center says Roblox doesn't support OBS in-game capture, and OBS warns that Roblox cannot be captured with Game Capture. | Delete the Game Capture source and capture the [RobloxPlayerBeta.exe]: Roblox window with Window Capture. If that still fails, use Display Capture. |
| Window Capture is black too | The capture method is set to BitBlt, which OBS says cannot capture Roblox, or Windows or OBS is too old for the newer method. | Set Capture Method to Windows 10 (1903 and up), or Modern (WGC) in some versions. If it is missing or greyed out, check that you are on Windows 10 1903 or later and OBS 27 or later, and update. |
| Only Display Capture is black, on a laptop | On laptops with both integrated and dedicated graphics, OBS and the screen can end up on different GPUs. | Update OBS and Windows, and pick the Windows 10 capture method manually. If you switched OBS to the power-saving GPU earlier, set it back to high performance. |
| No game sound in the video | Desktop Audio points to a different device than your speakers or headset, or the audio source lost the Roblox window. | Check the devices in Settings → Audio and reselect the Roblox window in Capture Audio (BETA) or Application Audio Capture. For apps that still are not picked up, OBS suggests routing them through a virtual audio cable. |
| Sound plays twice or echoes | Desktop Audio and a Roblox-only audio source are capturing the same sound. | If you use a Roblox-only source, disable or mute Desktop Audio. |
| The game stutters while recording, or the video is choppy | A CPU encoder (x264), resolution or bitrate set too high, and high graphics quality are piling up. | Switch to a hardware encoder and lower the output resolution to 1080p or 720p. In Roblox, press ESC, open Settings, set Graphics Mode to Manual and lower Graphics Quality a notch or two. |
Check before you hit record
- No Game Capture source is left in the scene, and Window Capture points to the [RobloxPlayerBeta.exe]: Roblox window.
- Capture Method is Windows 10 (1903 and up) or Modern (WGC), and the preview shows the experience moving.
- Game sound comes in through one path only (if you use a Roblox-only source, Desktop Audio is off).
- The right microphone is selected, and its meter in the Audio Mixer moves when you speak.
- The encoder is a hardware encoder, and the drive under Recording Path has enough free space.
- You will not minimize the Roblox window while recording; a minimized window can freeze or turn black in Window Capture.
To save every experience automatically without OBS setup: DOR
DOR is a free Windows PC app built on an OBS-based recording engine. For Roblox it does not hook the game with game capture; it is designed to capture the monitor, crop the recording to the Roblox window area, and record any stretch where the Roblox window is covered or minimized as black. Launch the Roblox player you installed from roblox.com and join an experience, and recording starts automatically; leave the experience for the home screen or close Roblox, and it stops. Any experience is recorded, whatever the genre or creator, and each experience becomes one mp4 in your library. The Roblox home screen and experience lists are not recorded, and if you jump into an experience right after launching Roblox, recording can start about 15 to 20 seconds late. While you are recording inside an experience, pressing F8 (you can change it) saves the last 30 seconds as a separate clip, with 15, 30, 45 or 60 seconds to choose from, and your microphone is recorded with noise suppression along with the game sound. Quality defaults to 1080p at 60fps and goes up to 2160p. In the library you can trim a recording, export it at 16:9, 9:16 or 1:1, or share it as a dor.gg link, and DOR Studio in the browser lets you merge videos and add text, background music and effect templates. DOR does not pick out kills or highlights automatically in Roblox, so you choose the scenes yourself. You can turn automatic recording off with the full-game recording toggle in settings.
