Most people searching how to add funds to Steam Wallet want one of three things: the quickest way to top up, a way to add money to Steam without a credit card, or a straight answer on whether Steam gift cards are being discontinued.
The short answer is that the most reliable route is Steam's own checkout. From your account page, open Add funds to your Steam Wallet, choose one of the preset amounts, and Steam takes you to checkout, which lists every payment method available in your region.
What you see depends on where your account is. US accounts get the widest card choice, UK accounts also see bank, e-wallet and pay later options, and Canada and Australia sit somewhere in between. Meanwhile, the gift card aisle is changing.
In June 2026 Valve announced it will not restock physical Steam Gift Cards once retailers run out, so physical cards will only be on shelves while stocks last.
This guide walks through the steps, the payment options by account country, where each one tends to fail, how to redeem a code, and the risks behind cheap Steam Wallet codes.
The short version: card or PayPal for speed, paysafecard or codes without a card
If you have a debit or credit card, paying at checkout is the fastest option, and funds usually appear right after payment.
PayPal works for wallets in US dollars, pounds, euros, Canadian dollars and Australian dollars, which makes it the easiest way to add money to Steam without typing card details into Steam.
Steam Support notes that since July 2025 PayPal only processes Steam payments in EUR, CAD, GBP, JPY, AUD and USD, so a wallet in any other currency won't see it.
With no card at all, look for paysafecard at checkout in the UK, Canada and Australia, use Trustly, Klarna or Skrill in the UK, redeem a wallet code, or ask a family member to send you a digital gift card. Guest checkout means they don't even need a Steam account to do it.
You also don't have to top up the exact price of a game: when your balance is short, Steam lets you pay the rest with another payment method. Physical gift cards are now a question of what's left on the shelf and what's already in your drawer, and cards you own can be redeemed whenever you like.
If you're topping up before a big sale, check the Steam sale dates first and run a small test top up with the method you plan to use.
How to add funds to Steam Wallet, from checkout to code redemption
- 1Check your balance and accountSign in to Steam and your current wallet balance shows in the top right, next to your profile name. If the PC is shared, make sure you're on the account you actually want to top up. An account that has never had a wallet balance may be asked for an address so Steam can set the wallet currency.
- 2Open Add funds to your Steam WalletClick your profile name, choose Account Details, then Add funds to your Steam Wallet. You'll see a short list of preset amounts starting from a minimum, with no box for a custom figure. Click Add funds next to the amount you want.
- 3Pick a payment method and review the orderAt checkout, choose a card, PayPal or whatever else your region offers. Steam lets you review the order before it's placed, so double check the amount and the account name before you confirm. If the website keeps failing, try the Steam app instead, and the other way round.
- 4Confirm the funds arrivedFunds normally appear straight away. If they don't, look for the Steam purchase receipt email, make sure you're signed in to the account named on it, and restart Steam. If nothing has changed two hours after paying, contact Steam Support.
- 5Redeem a gift card or wallet codeFor a physical card or a code someone sent you, go to Redeem a Steam Gift Card or Wallet Code while signed in, enter the code and click Continue. The value is added to your wallet balance.
- 6Fix code errors by checking similar charactersSteam Support suggests swapping the number 0 for the letters Q, O or D, the number 1 for the letter I, the letter B for the number 8 and the letter G for the number 6. Retailer activation can take a few hours, so try again later, and if it still fails, contact support with a clear photo of the whole back of the card and the receipt.
Ways to add funds to Steam Wallet and what to check when they fail
| Method | How it works | If it fails, check |
|---|---|---|
| Credit or debit card (Visa and Mastercard, plus American Express in the US and Discover in the US and Australia) | Choose the card type at checkout and enter your details | A billing address or CVV that doesn't match your bank's records gets declined. A hold from a failed attempt can take up to 30 days for your bank to release |
| PayPal | Pick PayPal at checkout and sign in to approve the payment | Steam only offers PayPal for USD, GBP, EUR, CAD, AUD and JPY wallets. If it's missing, check your wallet currency |
| paysafecard (UK, Canada, Australia) | Choose paysafecard at checkout and follow its prompts to pay with your voucher | Make sure the voucher balance covers the amount, and finish paysafecard's steps before closing the window |
| Bank, e-wallet and pay later options in the UK (Trustly, Skrill, Klarna) | Choose the option at checkout and approve it in your bank or provider app | Approval happens outside Steam, so complete it before closing the window. Pay later plans follow the provider's own terms |
| Physical Steam Gift Card (while stock lasts) | Enter the code on the Redeem a Steam Gift Card or Wallet Code page | Activation by the retailer can take several hours. Codes printed only on a receipt have to go back to the store |
| Digital gift card from family or friends | They pick you as the recipient on Steam's gift card page and pay, and the funds land once you accept the gift. Guest checkout works without a Steam account | Existing wallet funds can't buy digital gift cards, and some countries restrict sending or receiving them, which checkout will flag |
| Wallet balance plus another method | When your balance is short, pay the remainder at checkout with a card or PayPal | If you're abroad, turn off any VPN or proxy and use a payment method that matches your store country |
Looking for cheap Steam Wallet codes? Know these risks first
- Steam has no official discount on wallet funds. What you pay is what lands in your wallet, and discounts only apply when you buy games.
- A code priced below face value that was issued in another currency may not redeem on your wallet. Valve says it limited redemption to your wallet's currency as part of its fight against scams.
- Steam forbids getting around regional pricing, and its support documents say accounts doing so can be locked. Steam declines every purchase made through an anonymous proxy, and its first fix for failed payments is to turn off any VPN.
- If anyone asks you to pay taxes, debts, bail or a prize fee in Steam gift card codes, it's almost certainly a scam. Steam cards only work on Steam, so never give a code to someone you don't know.
- If you're unsure whether a seller is legitimate, Valve's advice is to ask the retailer first. If a code bought from an individual fails, getting your money back is hard.
Spent your top up on a new game? Let DOR record it from the first match
Once your wallet is topped up and the new game is in your library, it's worth capturing it from the very first match. DOR is a free Windows app that detects supported games when you launch them and records the whole match, with every recording collected in My Clips in the app.
In PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS and CS2 on Steam, kills are also saved automatically as separate highlight clips, and other supported games are recorded in full so you can trim the moments you want yourself.
Cut a section in the app and save it in 16:9, 9:16 or 1:1, or open DOR Studio to join several videos, add text and background music, then download an mp4 or share a dor.gg link that plays right in a phone browser, handy for a Discord server. Game audio and your mic are captured together on one track. The full rundown on recording Steam games is in how to record Steam games.
