If Crimson Desert keeps crashing to desktop on PC, closes right after launch, or started crashing on loading screens after the latest update, there is rarely a single cause, so the quickest route is to rule things out in order. This guide is based on what we checked on October 16, 2026: the Game Launch Issues and Technical Issues / Performance sections of the Crimson Desert FAQ on Pearl Abyss Support (support.pearlabyss.com), the official patch notes, and the Known Issues notice on the official site. It covers the PC versions on Steam and the Epic Games Store. At the time of writing, the latest patch is the 2.03.02 all-platform hotfix from September 23, and the Known Issues list, last updated September 21, has no crash entry. In other words, most crashes players are running into right now are not on Pearl Abyss's list of issues under investigation, so check your own setup first and, if the crash keeps coming back, collect the repro steps and a video and send a report. We don't cover community config-file tweaks or unofficial patches here.
Bottom line: sort by when it crashes, then check version, files, drivers and background apps
Start by writing down exactly when the game crashes, then work through the official fixes one at a time. A crash at launch or on the logo points first to file integrity and an antivirus exception. A crash during the initial load points to your graphics driver version and, on Intel Core 13th or 14th Gen CPUs, the BIOS. Crashing only since an update points to whether the latest hotfix installed and whether your files are intact. Pearl Abyss's FAQ names antivirus software, VPNs, anti-spyware tools, firewalls and security applications, as well as recording or broadcasting software, as background programs that can interfere with launch or affect performance and stability, and suggests temporarily disabling or completely removing anything other than your antivirus. If you have Steam's built-in Game Recording (background recording) turned on, it belongs to the same group, so switch it off for a test and make sure its recordings aren't filling your drive (Steam Game Recording low disk space fix). The Charting the Unknown DLC is due on October 29 at 15:00 PT (22:00 UTC) (Crimson Desert Charting the Unknown release date). If crashes start right after the DLC goes live, read that day's patch notes and the Known Issues notice before anything else.
How to fix Crimson Desert crashing on PC, step by step
- 1Note when and where it crashesIs it right after launch (before or after the logo), during the initial load, when loading a save, when you do one specific thing such as opening the map or cooking, only since a patch, or at random? Write it down, and if an error window appears, take a screenshot that shows the full message. Knowing the moment tells you which row of the table below to start with, and the same note becomes your reproduction steps if you report the crash later.
- 2Check your game version against the patch notesOpen the updates board on the official Crimson Desert site and compare the latest patch with the version you have installed. As of October 16, 2026, the latest is 2.03.02, an all-platform hotfix released on September 23. Patch 2.02.00 (September 11) fixed a crash when starting a new game with DLSS Frame Generation enabled, and hotfix 2.03.01 (September 21) fixed the game crashing when interacting with NPCs in certain situations. Also make sure the update isn't stuck in Steam or the Epic Games Launcher.
- 3Verify the game filesThe official FAQ article on verifying the integrity of game files says that the game not launching, crashes and glitched graphics can be caused by corrupted files. On Steam, right-click Crimson Desert in your Library, choose Properties, open the Installed Files tab and select Verify integrity of game files. In the Epic Games Launcher, click the three dots next to the game name, choose Manage and click Verify. It can take several minutes, so let it finish before you launch the game again.
- 4Update your graphics driver to the recommended versionFor performance and stability, the FAQ recommends AMD driver version 25.9.2 or above and NVIDIA driver version 581.29 or above. Update through AMD's or NVIDIA's official app or website, then restart your PC. Support for Intel Arc GPUs was added in patch 1.03.00, and Pearl Abyss says compatibility and performance across Intel GPUs will keep improving over time.
- 5Add an antivirus exception and cut back background appsFollowing the FAQ article on antivirus and other application-related issues, add Crimson Desert as an exception in your antivirus, then verify your files or reinstall to recover anything that was missing or quarantined. For VPNs, anti-spyware tools, firewalls, security apps and recording or broadcasting software, the FAQ suggests disabling them temporarily or removing them completely. Turn them off one at a time and replay the same section; that way you can tell which program is responsible.
- 6On Intel Core 13th or 14th Gen, update the BIOSThe FAQ points to a confirmed Intel issue that can make applications unstable on 13th and 14th Gen Core processors, and says Crimson Desert may fail to launch properly or close during the loading screen on those CPUs. Its recommendation is to update your BIOS to the latest version, with the caveat that this may not fully fix a processor that is already showing signs of instability. Follow your motherboard maker's instructions for the update itself.
- 7Undo recent changes, then report the crashIf you changed a graphics option such as frame generation or the upscaler, or installed a mod, just before the crashes began, revert it or remove the mod and test the same section again. If it still crashes, report it. On PC, first run PERS.exe in the game's bin64 folder (the Pearl Abyss Error Reporting System): it sends error dumps, logs and your hardware specs, then copies a Unique ID to your clipboard. Enter that ID in the Submit Feedback form on the Crimson Desert page of Pearl Abyss Support. The official FAQ strongly recommends this route because it gives the team the most detail. Include your game version, driver version, when it crashes and what you've already tried, plus a link to a clip of the moments before the crash if you have one.
What to check first, by symptom (official sources as of October 16, 2026)
| Symptom | Try first | Official source and notes |
|---|---|---|
| Closes at launch or on the logo | Verify game files and add an antivirus exception | FAQ articles on verifying game files and on antivirus and other application-related issues |
| Closes during the initial load | Update the BIOS on Intel Core 13th/14th Gen and check the recommended graphics driver | The FAQ specifically mentions closing during the loading screen on those CPUs. |
| Crashing since an update | Confirm the latest hotfix is installed and verify files | The latest patch is 2.03.02 as of October 16. After any update, check Known Issues as well. |
| Crash when starting a new game with DLSS Frame Generation on | Make sure you're on 2.02.00 or later | Listed as fixed in the 2.02.00 patch notes. |
| Game closes when interacting with an NPC | Make sure you're on 2.03.01 or later | Hotfix 2.03.01 fixed the crash during NPC interactions in certain situations. |
| Crashes only with a recording or streaming app running | Pause that app and replay the same section to compare | The FAQ lists recording and broadcasting software. In DOR, turn off Full gameplay recording for Crimson Desert only. |
| Crashes every time you load a save or do one specific thing | Write down the repro steps, save a clip and report it | The Known Issues list had no crash entry as of October 16. |
Gather this before you report the crash
- Game version (for example 2.03.02) and store (Steam or Epic Games Store)
- CPU, graphics card, RAM, Windows version and graphics driver version
- When it crashes (launch, loading, a specific action) and whether it happens every time
- What you've already tried: file verification, driver update, antivirus exception, closing apps
- A screenshot showing the full error message, if one appeared
- A 10 to 30 second clip of the moments before the crash (in DOR, trimmed and liked before you relaunch)
Keep the moments before the crash with DOR and attach them to your report
DOR is a free Windows PC app. When it detects Crimson Desert (CrimsonDesert.exe), it automatically records the whole session as one video, from the moment the game starts until it closes, and this is on by default on personal PCs. While the game is still running, press F8 when you spot a bug or freeze to save the last 30 seconds as a clip. Clip length (15, 30, 45 or 60 seconds) and recording resolution and frame rate can't be changed while recording, so set them in Settings before you launch the game. Crashes work differently. When the game process ends, the recording for that session is saved and stops, so pressing F8 after a crash won't capture the crash itself. The moments before the crash are at the end of the session video you just recorded. Before relaunching, open that video in My Clips and check that it plays all the way to the end. Then sign in, use Trim Section to cut the last 10 to 30 seconds and hit Like on the trimmed clip, because it's saved in the same session folder as the original. Full gameplay recordings are managed within a 5 GB share by default, and after your next session ends, older session folders can be cleaned up automatically along with the clips inside them; only liked videos are kept. If you don't have time to trim right away, hit Like on the full video first. Add a link to the trimmed clip in your official report; we walk through the whole process in how to report a bug in Crimson Desert. If you suspect recording is behind the crashes, go to Settings > Game, turn off Full gameplay recording for Crimson Desert only, and replay the same section. DOR also warns you when free disk space drops below 30 GB, stops recording automatically below 20 GB, and won't start a new recording until you free up space. The same F8 clip works for saving a clean kill from a Crimson Desert boss rematch, too.
