If you are searching for duo names for games, you probably already have the partner: a girlfriend, boyfriend or best friend you queue with most nights, and you want your names to look like a set when they pop up next to each other in the kill feed. Couple or friends, any gender, the recipe is the same. Pick one theme you both like, split it into two halves, and make sure each half still works on its own. Below you will find a quick checklist first, then a table of matching gamertags for couples and friends in seven styles: split phrases, cool opposites, food pairs, funny, cute, simple English words and puns. Every pair is original, so copy it as it is or change one letter to make it yours. If you are still deciding what to play together, browse couple games on PC and two player co-op games on PC and name your duo after the game you pick.
The short answer: one theme, two halves, each name fine on its own
Three rules keep a pair name from going stale. First, agree on a shared theme: food, weather, animals, morning and night, or anything you both genuinely like. Second, split it. A phrase cut in half reads as one sentence when both tags sit side by side in the lobby, and a pair of opposites looks good even when only one of you is online. Third, check that each name stands on its own, because you will both play solo or with other friends sometimes. Short, real words beat long strings of symbols: they are easier to read in the kill feed and easier for teammates to call out. For a funny pair, split the roles of the one who carries and the one who gets carried; for a cute pair, use soft, short words of the same kind. If you mostly play League of Legends or VALORANT, remember that a Riot ID is a game name plus a tagline after #, so you can keep different names and share the same tagline. When the names are set and you want to climb together, read our LoL duo guide and VALORANT duo guide before your first duo ranked night.
Check these before you both change names
- No real names, birthdays, anniversary dates, school names or hometowns. Anyone who knows you could work out who you are from a matching pair.
- Both names are easy to read in the kill feed and on the scoreboard. Lookalike characters and very long tags are hard for teammates to call out.
- You both genuinely like the pair. A name only one of you finds funny will not last.
- Each name still makes sense if you stop playing together one day, whether you are a couple or best friends. Then nobody has to rush a name change later.
- You checked each game's naming rules on its name change screen, since length, allowed characters and banned words differ from game to game.
- You know what to do when a clip shows your tags. Use how to blur part of a video to hide just the names before you post.
Matching duo names for couples and friends, by style
| Style | Example pairs (A & B) | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Split phrase | Better & Together · Side & Kick · Team & Work · High & Five | Reads as one phrase when you sit next to each other in the team list. Pick phrases that still make sense if the order flips. |
| Opposites (cool) | Frost & Flame · Dawn & Dusk · Shadow & Light · Storm & Calm | Each half looks good alone, which helps on the nights one of you plays solo. |
| Food pair | Mac & Cheese · Salt & Pepper · Toast & Jam · Fries & Shake | Works for couples and friends alike, and deciding who takes which half is part of the fun. |
| Funny | Bus Driver & Free Rider · Lag & Excuse · One More & Last One · Backseat & Driver | Splitting the carry and the passenger keeps losses light and gives teammates a laugh. |
| Cute | Mochi & Bean · Honey & Bun · Pudding & Muffin · Pickle & Sprout | Soft, short words read as cute. Pair two of the same kind, like two desserts or two snacks. |
| Simple English | Nova & Orbit · Ember & Ash · Atlas & Compass · Ace & Wing | Short real words are easy to call out. If one is taken, add the same tagline or number to both. |
| Puns | Olive & Juice · Sole & Mate · Wok & Roll · Lettuce & Turnip | Say them together out loud to get the joke. Mix in a word from a game you both play, like PUBG or Overwatch. |
How to make a matching pair name together
- 1Pick one shared themeChoose something you both like: a food, a season, an animal, a time of day. One theme gives you a handful of candidates in a minute and makes it easy to rename both accounts the same way when you start a new game later. Skip real places or dates only the two of you know, since those point back to you.
- 2Split one word or phrase in halfCut a phrase into two tags, like Better & Together, or pick two words that belong together, like Frost & Flame. Copying a pair from the table, or changing a single letter, is completely fine.
- 3Tie the halves with the same tag or numberIf a name is taken or the link looks weak, add the same ending to both. In League of Legends and VALORANT, you can both use the same Riot ID tagline after #, and anyone who sees it knows you are a pair. In other games, add the same word or a 01 and 02 to both names. Keep birthdays and anniversaries out of the numbers.
- 4Check both names are freeA pair breaks if only one half is available. Type both names into each game's name change screen, make sure they pass that game's rules, and keep two or three backup pairs ready so you can move on quickly.
- 5Change them at the same timeSit together or stay on a call and change both names in the same session. If one of you waits, someone else can grab the other half. Afterwards, check that the new names show up in each other's friend lists, and read the name change screen carefully, because costs and how often you can change differ from game to game.
Names matched? Build a guild for two on DOR
Once the names match, give your duo a home for the matches you play together. DOR is a free Windows app that records supported games automatically while you play, and in League of Legends, VALORANT, PUBG, Overwatch and a few more it also cuts your kills and highlights into clips on its own. On dor.gg you can search for your partner by nickname or ID, follow each other and send 1:1 messages, and connecting Discord shows which of your Discord friends already use DOR. Create a private guild just for the two of you: share your clips there, pin the pair names you are still choosing between, and post a guild schedule such as 'duo ranked tonight' with a time, number of slots and mode. Your partner gets a notification, and whoever joins talks in the schedule chat. After every League of Legends or VALORANT match DOR also shows the players you just played with, so you can follow a new friend from a duo game together with everyone else at once, or create a guild with those friends right away. If you played League of Legends or VALORANT together, a DOR party clip puts both POVs of the same match into one video.
