Key takeaways
  • Blizzard's official chart (July 18, 2025) put Gold at 31.7% and Platinum at 34.9%, with Champion under 0.1%. Ranks were redistributed twice since: Season 18 widened the top tiers and August 2026 added Emerald
  • Nine tiers from Bronze to Champion, five divisions each. Competitive requires 50 wins on new accounts, 10 placement matches per role in reset seasons, and Narrow-group division limits for parties
  • Replays keep only your 10 most recent matches and are wiped each patch. DOR keeps full-match recordings and auto kill clips so your ranked review footage survives

Yes, Blizzard has published an official Overwatch rank distribution. Its July 18, 2025 blog chart shows Gold at 31.7% and Platinum at 34.9%, so two tiers hold roughly two thirds of Competitive players, while Champion sits under 0.1%. That chart predates the Season 18 top-tier retuning and the Emerald tier added on August 11, 2026, so for your current percentile the most accurate source is the new Rank Distribution Indicator in the Competitive Overview. Everything below was checked on September 14, 2026: the nine-tier order (Bronze to Champion, divisions 5 to 1), the 50-win Competitive unlock, 10 placement matches, group rank limits and rank reset rules, all quoted from patch notes. If you plan to review your placements, our Overwatch replay code guide covers where replays live, but keep in mind that only the 10 most recent matches are kept and they vanish with every patch.

The short answer: an official chart exists, and Competitive needs 50 wins, 10 placements and a Narrow group

Overwatch rank distribution is not a secret. In 'Weekly Recall: Meet Your Matchmaker' (July 18, 2025) Blizzard published a Competitive distribution by skill tier and explained that internally every rank is a point on a bell curve centered at 0.0, with player counts dropping sharply the further you move from the middle. Two redistributions followed. Season 18 (August 26, 2025) tuned Master, Grandmaster and Champion to hold a larger share of players, and Season 4 of Reign of Talon: Heroes of Busan (August 11, 2026) inserted Emerald between Platinum and Diamond, moving players from both tiers into it while making the top Champion divisions more exclusive. Blizzard has not released a post-Emerald chart, so use the Rank Distribution Indicator added in that same patch to see where you stand today. The Competitive requirements come down to three rules. New accounts need 50 wins since the May 12, 2026 patch raised the unlock from 20; in a reset season you must finish 10 placement matches per role before a rank appears; and groups are classified as Narrow or Wide by rank gap. Bronze through Diamond players must be within five divisions of each other, Master and Grandmaster within two, Champion within one, and a Wide group of four cannot queue at all. If you are looking for a placement duo at a different rank, check those division windows first.

Tier (low to high, 5 divisions each)Official chart share (July 18, 2025)Later changes and notes

Platinum34.9%Part of this tier moved into Emerald in the August 11, 2026 redistribution
EmeraldNo chart (added August 11, 2026)Sits between Platinum and Diamond. No official chart published since. Not restated in the Bronze-to-Diamond five-division group rule

Master3.2%Share increased in Season 18. Groups must be within two divisions to be Narrow
Grandmaster0.3%Share increased in Season 18. Groups must be within two divisions to be Narrow
ChampionUnder 0.1%Added in Season 9 (February 2024). Top divisions made more exclusive in August 2026. Groups must be within one division

Competitive requirements and group limits checklist (checked September 14, 2026)

  • New-account unlock: 50 wins. The May 12, 2026 patch moved it back from 20 to 50; the August 2025 Season 18 wording was 'total matches won in Unranked modes'
  • Reset seasons require 10 placements per role. The February 2026 patch notes call them 'the Rank Resets we do every 3 seasons today'
  • The August 11, 2026 Season 4 notes mention no reset or placements, only the Emerald redistribution. Wait for an official announcement on the next reset
  • Narrow groups: Bronze to Diamond within five divisions (not restated after Emerald), Master and Grandmaster within two, Champion within one
  • Wide groups can queue, but four-player Wide groups cannot, queue times rise, rank moves less per result, and Challenger Score is not earned
  • Top 500 Challenger: 250 Competitive wins, Challenger Score of 2000 combined or 1500 per role, Diamond not eligible, Endorsement Level 2 required
  • Stadium uses a separate ranking system (seven leagues, five divisions, no placements) and never mixes with Competitive rank. Customer Support cannot adjust ranks
Since Season 18, Competitive rewards are based on your highest rank in a season rather than your final rank. From the February 2026 patch, reaching Diamond or above in Role Queue or Open Queue unlocks Doomfist's Crimson Wolf skin, so a peak hit right after placements still counts.

From the Competitive requirements to checking your rank

  1. 1Meet the Competitive unlockNew accounts need 50 wins. The May 12, 2026 patch only says the requirement rose from 20 wins to 50 wins and does not spell out which modes count, so use the unlock message on the Competitive screen to see how many wins remain.
  2. 2Play 10 placements per role in a reset seasonThe most recent rank reset was Season 1 on February 10, 2026. Role Queue needs 10 placement matches for each of tank, damage and support, and Open Queue has its own separate set. After that, ranks update after every match under the Season 9 rules.
  3. 3Read your rank and the distribution indicatorCompetitive Progress shows your rank cards per role and match history, and the Competitive Overview after each match shows rank changes, skill modifiers and the Rank Distribution Indicator. Menu wording can differ by version and platform.
  4. 4Check Hero Skill Rating in your Career ProfileHero Comparison in the Career Profile lists a Hero Skill Rating from 0 to 5000 per hero, where 5000 equals the top of Champion 1. It is not used in matchmaking and needs five placement games per hero.

Keep your placement footage from disappearing with the next patch

The most reliable way to climb is reviewing your own ranked games. Overwatch replays, though, keep only your 10 most recent matches, are reset whenever a new patch launches, and the official docs list no video export. That is why placements you meant to review a week later are often already gone. DOR is a free Windows app that detects Overwatch automatically, records every Competitive match in full, and auto-clips highlights such as kills into its in-app library. It defaults to NVIDIA NVENC hardware encoding and captures game audio and your microphone at the same time, so the calls you made with your duo are part of the review. When you want to cut one fight out, the browser clip editor opens without installing anything and the result shares as a dor.gg link that plays in a mobile browser. Check the supported scope on the Overwatch recording page, and see the Play of the Game save guide for keeping the highlight shown after each match.

Official sources and check date

Tier percentages come from Blizzard's Weekly Recall: Meet Your Matchmaker chart published July 18, 2025, and the Emerald tier plus the Rank Distribution Indicator from the August 2026 patch notes. The 50-win unlock is from the May 2026 notes, the rank reset and Top 500 Challenger rules from February 2026, and group limits from April 2024 and December 2025, all verified on September 14, 2026. These values change with patches, so read the in-game notice and the latest notes before you queue.

FAQ

FAQ

Where do I check the Overwatch Competitive requirements?

Two places: the unlock notice on the in-game Competitive screen and the official patch notes. As of September 14, 2026, new accounts need 50 wins and reset seasons need 10 placement matches per role. Blizzard Customer Support cannot adjust ranks, so the notes are the reference.

What percentage of players are Champion?

Under 0.1% on the official chart from July 18, 2025. Blizzard said the August 11, 2026 redistribution made the highest Champion divisions more exclusive, and no updated chart has been published. Use the Rank Distribution Indicator in the Competitive Overview for your current standing.

Does my tier reset every season?

No. The February 2026 patch notes describe rank resets as something Blizzard does every three seasons, and the last one was Season 1 on February 10, 2026. The August 11, 2026 Season 4 notes mention no reset. Reset seasons require 10 placements, and Blizzard stated that the February 2026 reset specifically did not change the rank distribution.
