Key takeaways
  • Roblox is not broken when it stops at 60 FPS. If Maximum Frame Rate in the Settings tab is left on Default, the cap is 60 FPS no matter what refresh rate your monitor has.
  • On Windows, switching it to 60, 120, 144 or 240 lifts the cap, and Shift+F5 shows your real frame rate. As of October 14, 2026, we found no official announcement that the setting has reached Mac, phones or consoles.
  • Roblox does not support external FPS unlockers and recommends the in-game setting. Since a rollout announced in late September 2025, Fast Flags that are not on Roblox's allowlist are ignored, so on Windows the official setting is the safer route up to 240.

Yes, Roblox is capped at 60 FPS by default, and you can lift that cap yourself on Windows. Join any experience, press Esc to open the Roblox menu, go to the Settings tab and change Maximum Frame Rate from Default to a higher value. Default means 60 FPS, not your monitor's refresh rate, which is why a 144Hz or 240Hz monitor still shows 60 until you change it. Roblox introduced the setting in a developer forum announcement on May 30, 2024, with the options Default, 60, 120, 144 and 240. Roblox's creator documentation says the same thing: the default client frame rate cap is 60 FPS, and Windows users can raise it to 240 FPS. Players used to install an external FPS unlocker to get past 60, but on Windows the built-in setting now goes all the way to 240. To see your frame rate on screen, press Shift+F5 inside an experience. This guide focuses on lifting the cap itself rather than general graphics tuning. It covers where the setting lives, the other things that can quietly hold you at 60 such as monitor refresh rate and VSync, how to show FPS, where FPS unlockers stand today, and what is known for Mac, mobile and consoles. If you play a shooter experience, our Roblox RIVALS settings guide walks through the same setup for that game. Every Roblox fact here was checked on October 14, 2026, and menus can change with updates.

Bottom line: use the official setting up to 240 on Windows and skip unlockers

On a Windows PC, start by matching Maximum Frame Rate to your monitor. A 60Hz monitor is fine on Default or 60, a 144Hz monitor should use 144, and a 240Hz monitor should use 240. If your refresh rate is not in the list, such as 165Hz, decide whether to hold it at 144 or open it to 240, then compare both with Shift+F5. Roblox said it may add in-between values later, so the options on your screen could differ from this guide. There is nothing above 240: a Roblox staff member explained that the physics engine runs at 240Hz and there are known issues above that, so they kept it simple for now. If you changed the setting and still sit at 60, the cap is most likely coming from outside Roblox. Check the Windows refresh rate, VSync or frame limits in your graphics driver control panel, and your laptop's power mode, in that order. The Roblox Help Center does not describe a VSync option inside Roblox settings, so that part has to be checked on the graphics driver side. We do not recommend external FPS unlockers. In its 2024 announcement, Roblox said unlockers work by changing an internal flag that was never meant to be a stable public API, so they can break without notice, and it recommended the in-game setting instead. On September 29, 2025, Roblox announced that the client only recognizes Fast Flags in ClientAppSettings.json that are on its official allowlist and ignores the rest, rolling the change out over the following days; when we checked the announcement on October 14, 2026, its list contained no frame rate flag. Roblox's anti-cheat help article also states that using modified versions of the Roblox app, or software that changes the way Roblox works, is against the rules and may lead to action on your account. We found no official document naming which unlockers fall under that, so we do not claim that any unlocker gets you banned. On Windows, though, the official setting already reaches 240, so there is little reason to take the risk. If what you see is not a low frame count but other players warping around, that is a network problem, so read how to lower your Roblox ping first.

How to lift the Roblox frame rate cap

  1. 1Check your monitor's refresh rate firstHowever many frames you allow in Roblox, a monitor running at 60Hz still shows at most 60 per second. On Windows 11, open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display and make sure the refresh rate is set to your monitor's maximum, for example 144Hz. With two monitors, select the one Roblox runs on. If a high refresh rate monitor only offers 60Hz, the cable or port may not support higher rates, so check the monitor manual for the recommended connection.
  2. 2Open the Settings tab in the Roblox menuJoin any experience, then click the Roblox logo in the upper left or press Esc to open the menu. Choose the Settings tab at the top, where Maximum Frame Rate sits alongside Graphics Mode and Graphics Quality. It is a Roblox-wide setting rather than a per-experience one, so it carries over to every experience you play. If you cannot find it, you may be on a device other than Windows; update Roblox to the latest version and check again.
  3. 3Change Maximum Frame Rate from Default to match your monitorClick Default and pick 60, 120, 144 or 240. Default is the same as 60 FPS, so on a high refresh rate monitor you need to switch to a number. 144 for a 144Hz monitor and 240 for a 240Hz monitor is the usual starting point. Then click Resume or press Esc to return to the experience. If your PC cannot keep up with the target and you only raise the cap, the number can swing widely, so use the next step to read the real figure and decide whether to drop one level.
  4. 4Show your real FPS with Shift+F5According to Roblox's creator documentation, pressing Shift+F5 in the client shows the debug stats summary, where you can read your current frame rate. Compare a quiet area, a crowded area and a scene with lots of effects. If you set the cap to 144 and still hover around 60, something else is limiting you; if the number moves between 80 and 130, the cap is not the issue, your hardware or Graphics Quality setting is. The same document's shortcut table lists the debug stats as Shift+Ctrl+F5, so if Shift+F5 does nothing, try that, and on a laptop where F5 is mapped to another function, hold Fn as well. It is a keyboard shortcut, so this method is for PC.
  5. 5Still stuck at 60? Check what else caps itIf your graphics driver control panel (NVIDIA Control Panel, AMD Software and so on) forces VSync on or sets a maximum frame rate, that value can take effect before the Roblox setting does. Check both the global settings and the per-program settings. Laptops can be held back on battery or in power saving mode, so plug in the charger and set the Windows power mode toward performance. Also check whether a screen recorder or overlay app has a frame limiter turned on.
  6. 6Clean up FPS unlockers and Fast Flag tweaksIf you installed an FPS unlocker in the past or used a launcher to write Fast Flag values, clean them up now. In an announcement dated September 29, 2025, rolled out over the following days, Roblox said the client only recognizes Fast Flags in ClientAppSettings.json that are on its allowlist, and values written by launchers such as Bloxstrap do not take effect unless they are on that list. Roblox says flags outside the allowlist are simply ignored with no further action, but its anti-cheat help article lists software that changes the way Roblox works as against the rules. If Roblox shows a message that it crashed due to incompatible software along with a file path, the official advice is to close that program. Downloads from unclear sources also carry a malware risk.

Frame rate cap by device and method (checked October 14, 2026)

Device or methodCurrent cap and official guidanceWhat to do
Windows PCPick Default (60), 60, 120, 144 or 240 under Maximum Frame Rate in the Settings tab. Officially introduced in May 2024.Match it to your monitor and confirm the real number with Shift+F5.
MacThe announcement said Mac support would come at a later date, and we found no official notice of Mac support since then.Open the Settings tab yourself to see whether Maximum Frame Rate appears.
Phones and tabletsIn the announcement's comments, a Roblox staff member said not to expect mobile and console support soon. User feature requests to lift the fixed 60 FPS were still being posted in July 2026.Assume there is no official way to lift the cap and hold a steady 60 by managing Graphics Quality and heat.
Xbox and PlayStationMentioned alongside mobile in the same reply as not coming soon, and we found no official announcement since.Play on the default settings until Roblox announces otherwise.
External FPS unlockersNot officially supported. Because they change an internal flag, they can break without notice, and Roblox recommends the in-game setting. On Windows, switch to the official setting and remove any unlocker you installed.
Fast Flag tweaks (ClientAppSettings.json, including via launchers)Announced on September 29, 2025 and rolled out over the following days: only flags on the allowlist are recognized. The list in the announcement had no frame rate flag when we checked.Writing one will not take effect, so change the frame rate in the Settings tab.

What to check after lifting the cap

  • Your monitor's refresh rate is set to its maximum in Windows display settings.
  • Maximum Frame Rate in the Roblox Settings tab is a number that matches your monitor, not Default (60).
  • You checked VSync and frame limits in your graphics driver control panel, both globally and per program.
  • On a laptop, the charger is plugged in and the Windows power mode leans toward performance.
  • Shift+F5 shows the target frame rate holding up in crowded scenes too.
  • You use the official setting instead of an external FPS unlocker or Fast Flag files from unclear sources.
A higher cap is not automatically better. If you open it to 240 and the Shift+F5 number swings between 150 and 240, locking it at a value your PC can hold steadily, such as 144, can make motion feel more even. On the other hand, opening 240 on a 60Hz monitor may make input feel slightly more responsive, but the screen still shows 60 frames per second while your graphics card works harder and runs hotter. If you record while you play, recording adds load too, so check again with recording turned on.

Recording with DOR while you play at a high frame rate

DOR is a free Windows PC app. It automatically detects the PC version of Roblox downloaded from roblox.com, starts recording when you join an experience, and stops when you leave the experience for the home screen or close Roblox. It is on by default and can be turned off with the Full Game Recording toggle in settings. Any experience is recorded regardless of genre or creator, and each experience lands in your library as one mp4. Recording starts only after you join an experience, so the home screen is not recorded, and if you jump into an experience right after launching Roblox, the first recording can start about 15 to 20 seconds late. The thing to know once you lift the cap is that the game's frame rate and the recording's frame rate are separate. Even if Roblox runs at 144 or 240, the file is saved at the value chosen under Video Frame in DOR settings, for example 30fps or 60fps. The default is 1080p at 60fps, but depending on your graphics card the first-time setup can set it lower, to 720p at 30fps, so if you want smooth footage, check that it is set to 60fps. The idea of keeping the game at a high frame rate while recording at 60 is explained in how to record at 144Hz without losing frames. On NVIDIA graphics cards DOR uses NVENC hardware encoding by default, but recording still adds load, so press Shift+F5 with recording on and check your game frame rate again. If turning recording on drops your FPS sharply, see FPS drops when recording for the usual causes. While recording inside an experience, press F8 (you can change the key) to save the last 30 seconds as a separate clip, with lengths of 15, 30, 45 or 60 seconds to choose from. How to use hotkey clips is covered in how to clip Roblox on PC. Your microphone is recorded by default with noise suppression and mixed into one track with the game sound. After recording, you can trim a section in the library and export it at 16:9, 9:16 or 1:1, share it with a dor.gg link, or use DOR Studio in your browser to combine videos, add text, background music and effect templates, and download an mp4. Roblox does not get automatic clips that cut out kills or highlights, so you save moments yourself with F8 or by trimming. DOR cannot record Roblox on phones, tablets, Mac or consoles, so treat this as the method for when you play on PC.

FAQ

FAQ

Is Roblox capped at 60 FPS?

Not on a Windows PC. Maximum Frame Rate defaults to 60 FPS, which makes it look locked, but changing it to 120, 144 or 240 in the Settings tab raises the cap accordingly. When it launched in May 2024, the setting was Windows only, and Roblox said Mac would follow at a later date. On phones and tablets, users were still asking in July 2026 for the fixed 60 FPS to be lifted, and as of October 14, 2026 we found no official announcement of a way to remove that cap.

Will using an FPS unlocker get me banned?

We found no official Roblox document that names a specific FPS unlocker as grounds for action, so we cannot say for certain. Three official positions are confirmed: unlockers are not officially supported and Roblox recommends the in-game setting; Fast Flags outside the allowlist are simply ignored with no further action; and using modified versions of the Roblox app or software that changes the way Roblox works is against the rules and may lead to account action. On Windows the official setting already reaches 240, so there is little reason to use an unlocker.

I set it to 240 but my FPS is still stuck at 60. What should I check?

First, look at Windows display settings and make sure the monitor refresh rate is not set to 60Hz. Next, check VSync or maximum frame rate limits in your graphics driver control panel and your laptop's power mode. After changing settings, read the real number with Shift+F5. If it now moves above 60, the cap is gone, and anything beyond that comes down to your hardware and Graphics Quality. On a Mac or phone, the option may not exist at all.
