Key takeaways
  • Roblox's built-in Captures feature is free and needs no install, but videos max out at 30 seconds and voice chat and in-experience sounds are not recorded (Roblox Help Center, checked October 14, 2026). To keep longer footage with audio, you need PC recording software.
  • Xbox Game Bar, OBS, NVIDIA App, Medal and Bandicam differ in how recording starts, how long it runs and what it costs. With OBS, Roblox's own guidance is to use window or display capture instead of game capture.
  • DOR is a free Windows app that starts recording when you join an experience in the roblox.com PC version of Roblox and stops when you leave, and F8 saves the last 30 seconds as a separate clip. To cut lag, fix the encoder first, then the recording resolution, then Roblox's graphics quality.

The best recording software for Roblox depends on what you want to keep. For one short moment, Roblox's built-in Captures or Xbox Game Bar is enough. To keep a whole session in an experience with sound, you want a recorder with no length limit, such as OBS or DOR. Built-in Captures is right there in the experience menu, but according to the Roblox Help Center (checked October 14, 2026), videos are capped at 30 seconds, and voice chat and other in-experience sounds are not recorded. The in-experience UI and the names above avatars are removed from the video too. That makes it hard to keep moments where sound and length matter: your friends' reactions, the audio of a horror experience, or a full obby run from start to finish. Ways to get past that limit are covered in How to Record Roblox for Longer Than 30 Seconds. This guide compares seven tools you can use to record Roblox on a PC by how recording starts, how long it can run, what audio it captures, what it costs and what to watch for in Roblox, then walks through the settings that keep recording from causing lag (frame drops). The conditions for each program were checked on their official pages on October 14, 2026, and they can change. As for software that doesn't cause lag: every recorder adds some load to your PC, and we have not measured each one, so instead of quoting numbers this guide explains where recording lag comes from and which settings keep it small.

Bottom line: built-in tools for short moments, a PC recorder for full sessions and your voice

Here is the short version by goal. If a silent moment under 30 seconds is all you need, built-in Captures works without installing anything. If you record a moment with sound now and then, Xbox Game Bar (Win+Alt+R), which comes with Windows, is a quick start. If you want full control over scenes and audio, OBS fits, but Roblox's official anti-cheat help page says OBS in-game capture is known to have issues with Roblox and asks you to use window or desktop capture instead. The source setup is covered step by step in How to Record Roblox With OBS. With an NVIDIA graphics card, NVIDIA App's Instant Replay can save what just happened. Medal saves clips with F8 and says that once you link your Roblox account, it auto-clips moments such as wins and kills in supported experiences; its developer docs describe this as a module that experience creators add to send those events. If you keep forgetting to press record, DOR fits, because it starts recording automatically when you join an experience. Whichever tool you pick, if lag is the worry, start with a hardware encoder; why your FPS drops when you record explains the encoder side. If you play on a phone, tablet, Mac or console, most of the PC programs here won't apply, so check your device's own screen recording and built-in Captures first.

How to set up Roblox recording with less lag

  1. 1Decide what you want to keepDecide whether you are saving one short moment, a whole session in an experience, or commentary with your voice. A silent moment under 30 seconds is fine with built-in Captures. To save something after it has already happened, you need a tool with a replay buffer (instant replay). To keep an entire session, you need a recorder with no length limit. Once the goal is clear, picking a tool from the comparison table is quick.
  2. 2Check which PC version of Roblox you runOn Windows there is the version you download from roblox.com and the Roblox - Windows app from the Microsoft Store. According to the Roblox Help Center, the new Store app needs a one-time Xbox account link the first time you open it. Recorders detect games in different ways, so if you rely on automatic recording, make sure you launch the version your recorder supports. DOR works with the PC version downloaded from roblox.com.
  3. 3Turn on a hardware encoderA common cause of recording lag is software encoding, where your CPU compresses the video while it is also running the game. Pick a hardware encoder instead: NVENC on NVIDIA cards, AMF (VCE) on AMD and Quick Sync on Intel graphics. In OBS you choose the encoder under Settings > Output. For Xbox Game Bar, Microsoft says your graphics card has to support one of these hardware encoders before it can record clips.
  4. 4Start at 1080p 60fpsThe higher the recording resolution and frame rate, the more work for the encoder and your drive. Start by recording at 1080p 60fps; if the game stutters while you play, drop to 720p or try 30fps. Even on a 1440p or 4K monitor, 1080p is often enough for a YouTube video or a Short, and it keeps file sizes down too.
  5. 5Adjust Roblox's graphics quality and frame rate capIn an experience, press Esc to open the menu, go to the Settings tab, set Graphics Mode to Manual and drag the Graphics Quality slider left for better performance (Roblox Help Center). On Windows there is also a Maximum Frame Rate setting with Default (60 FPS), 60, 120, 144 and 240. If the game stutters while you record, try capping the frame rate at your monitor's refresh rate or one step lower to leave your graphics card some headroom.
  6. 6Use window or display capture instead of game captureIf you use OBS, follow Roblox's guidance and add a Window Capture or Display Capture source instead of Game Capture. Window Capture records only the Roblox window, while Display Capture records the whole monitor, so notifications or other windows can end up in the video. If your recording comes out black, change the capture method first.
  7. 7Run a short audio testBefore the real session, join an experience and record for a minute or two, then check that game sound, your mic and any call audio such as Discord came through the way you want. Built-in Captures records no sound by design, so if you need audio, use a PC recorder. Recording all desktop audio also picks up music and notification sounds, so look for a game-audio-only option if you need one.

Recording Roblox on PC: tools compared (checked October 14, 2026)

ToolHow it starts, length and audioCost and what to watch for in Roblox
Roblox built-in CapturesYou start and stop it yourself from the experience menu > Captures > the capture icon on the right of the screen. Videos run up to 30 seconds, voice chat and in-experience sounds are not recorded, and the UI and avatar names are removed.Free, with nothing to install. Videos stay in Roblox app storage and reach your PC's Videos folder only after you tap the save icon. It can't be used in experiences where the developer has turned capture off.
Xbox Game BarYou start and stop it with Win+Alt+R. With background recording on, Win+Alt+G saves what just happened. It records game audio, and Win+Alt+M toggles your mic.Comes with Windows at no extra cost. Your graphics card must support a hardware encoder, and it does not work on the Windows desktop or in File Explorer. Recordings are saved as mp4 files in Videos > Captures.
OBS StudioYou set up scenes and sources, then press record. There is no length limit, and with the replay buffer on it can also save what just happened. Game audio and mic levels can be adjusted separately.Free and open source. Per Roblox, use window or display capture rather than game capture, and expect to spend time setting the encoder, resolution and audio yourself.
NVIDIA App (Instant Replay)You start a recording yourself from the overlay, or leave Instant Replay on and save what just happened; how far back it saves is set in the settings.Requires an NVIDIA graphics card. It is the GPU maker's own app, so it isn't available on PCs with AMD or Intel graphics.
MedalThe default F8 hotkey saves what just happened as a clip (buffer from 15 seconds to 10 minutes). Medal says that with a linked Roblox account it auto-clips moments such as wins and kills in supported experiences.Free to use, with an optional paid Premium tier. Its developer docs describe auto-clipping as events sent by a module the experience creator adds, so it works only in supported experiences. Medal doesn't clip on Mac.
Bandicam (free version)You start and stop it with a hotkey. As of September 2026, the free version (Bandicam 2027) limits each recording to 5 minutes.Recordings have no watermark, but edited videos are exported with one. A paid license removes the limits. Older free versions had a 10-minute limit and a watermark.
DORStarts recording automatically when you join an experience in the roblox.com PC version of Roblox and stops when you leave. Each experience becomes one mp4 with no length limit, with game audio and your mic recorded together. F8 saves the last 30 seconds as a separate clip.A free Windows app with no recording length limit or watermark. DOR doesn't auto-clip kills or highlights in Roblox, so you save moments yourself with F8 or by trimming in the library. Mac, mobile and consoles aren't covered, and support for the Microsoft Store version hasn't been confirmed.

Check before you record

  • You checked whether you play the roblox.com PC version or the Microsoft Store app.
  • You decided whether you are keeping a moment under 30 seconds, a whole session or commentary with your voice.
  • Your recorder uses a hardware encoder such as NVENC, AMF or Quick Sync.
  • You start at 1080p 60fps and know which step to drop to if the game stutters.
  • In OBS, you added a Window Capture or Display Capture source instead of Game Capture.
  • A test recording confirmed that game sound and your mic come through.
  • Your hotkeys don't clash. Medal and DOR both use F8 for clips by default, so change one if you run both.
Running two or more recorders at once means the same screen gets encoded twice, which adds load and makes hotkey clashes more likely. Keep only the recorder you actually use running, and turn off background recording or replay features in the others. Even a single session in an experience can produce a large file, so set your save location to a drive with plenty of free space.

Record Roblox experiences automatically with DOR

DOR is a free Windows PC app. It detects the PC version of Roblox downloaded from roblox.com, starts recording when you join an experience, and stops when you leave the experience for the Roblox home screen or close Roblox. This automatic recording is on by default, and you can turn it off in DOR's settings. It records any experience, whatever the genre or creator, from obbies and horror to roleplay and tycoons, and each experience lands in your library as one mp4 with no length limit. Teleporting to another server within the same experience usually continues the same recording. DOR does not record the Roblox home screen or menus, though, and if you jump into an experience right after launching Roblox, recording can start 15 to 20 seconds late. Your mic is recorded by default with noise suppression, and game audio is included by default; depending on your settings, you can record only Roblox's audio instead of all desktop audio. Quality defaults to 1080p 60fps and goes up to 2160p, and on NVIDIA graphics cards DOR uses NVENC hardware encoding by default. Rather than hooking into the game, DOR is designed to capture the screen, crop it to the Roblox window and black out stretches where the window is covered or minimized. While you are recording in an experience, pressing F8 (you can change the key) saves the last 30 seconds (choose 15, 30, 45 or 60) as a separate clip; How to Clip Roblox covers it in detail. DOR doesn't automatically pick out kills or big moments in Roblox, so save the moments you want with F8, or trim them in the library, export at 16:9, 9:16 or 1:1 and share a dor.gg link. To merge several clips or add text, background music and effect templates, use DOR Studio in your browser. DOR records only on Windows PCs, so Roblox on phones, tablets, Macs and consoles isn't covered; for recording on a phone, see How to Record Roblox on Your Phone.

FAQ

FAQ

Isn't Roblox's built-in recording enough?

It is if you only need short moments without sound. According to the Roblox Help Center (checked October 14, 2026), built-in Captures videos run up to 30 seconds, voice chat and in-experience sounds are not recorded, and you can't use it in experiences where the developer has turned capture off. Videos are kept in Roblox app storage, so unless you tap the save icon to send them to your Videos folder, they are deleted along with the app. The official help page for video Captures only describes starting and stopping with the capture icon on the right of the screen; it doesn't list a keyboard shortcut. If you need your voice, sound effects or anything longer than 30 seconds, use PC recording software.

Roblox stutters whenever I record. What should I change first?

First, check that your recorder uses a hardware encoder such as NVENC, AMF or Quick Sync. Next, lower the recording resolution to 720p and, if needed, the frame rate to 30fps. If it still stutters, open Roblox's Settings, set Graphics Mode to Manual and lower Graphics Quality, or drop Maximum Frame Rate one step to give your graphics card some headroom. If you have several recorders running at once, keep only one. If OBS records a black screen, switch from Game Capture to Window Capture or Display Capture.

Can DOR record Roblox on a phone, a Mac or the Microsoft Store version?

No. DOR is a Windows PC app and works with the PC version of Roblox downloaded from roblox.com. Roblox running on phones, tablets, Macs, Xbox, PlayStation or VR isn't covered, and support for the Roblox - Windows app from the Microsoft Store hasn't been confirmed. Roblox Studio isn't recorded automatically either. On a phone, use Roblox's built-in Captures or your device's screen recorder, and when you want longer footage or your voice, consider playing on a PC with the same account and recording with DOR.
