If Roblox recording isn't working, the first job is to tell a setting problem apart from a built-in limit. According to Roblox's official help pages, checked on October 14, 2026, the built-in video capture only shows up after you select Captures from the top-left menu inside an experience, each video can run for up to 30 seconds, and voice chat and other in-experience sounds are not recorded. So where do Roblox videos save? They go to Roblox app storage first, which is why nothing appears when you open a folder on your PC. You have to open the clip from the Captures tab and tap the save icon to export it to the Videos folder on desktop or the camera roll on a phone. In other words, 'the button is gone' and 'the file is missing' are usually about settings and the saving step, while 'it stops at 30 seconds' and 'there is no sound' are limits of the feature itself. Video capture is fairly new, launched in July 2025, so following older guides built around a 'Record' tab or a specific key often leaves you looking for a menu that isn't there. Screenshots save to a different folder from videos, so check how to take Roblox screenshots and find the folder separately. This guide walks through each symptom, its cause, the order to check things in, and what to do before you lose a clip, all based on the official help pages.
Bottom line: button and file problems are settings you can fix; 30 seconds and silence are by design
If the icon is missing, go into an experience and select Captures in the menu to show the icon again. Selecting Captures works like a switch that shows or hides the icon each time, so if you selected it before, the icon may simply be hidden. The reverse, hiding the icon or turning the feature off, is covered in how to turn off the Roblox capture button. If capture fails in only one experience, its developer may have turned off player capture. The official help says developers can choose to turn off capture in their experience, and when they do, you can't capture there. If you recorded a clip but can't find the file, it is still sitting in app storage, and the save icon exports it. On the other hand, stopping at 30 seconds and recording no sound are the documented behavior, and the help pages describe no setting that changes either one. For long moments such as a boss fight or a full obby run, or for a video that needs your friends' voices and the game audio, switching to another recording method, as in how to record Roblox for longer than 30 seconds, is faster than trying to fix the built-in capture. The official help lists desktop and mobile as supported devices; Xbox, PlayStation and VR are not listed.
What to check when video capture isn't working
- 1Make sure you are inside an experienceVideo capture only works inside an experience. The capture icon does not appear on the Roblox app home, the avatar editor or the experience list, and the official help says you open your video gallery by starting any experience. Join an experience you play often, wait for loading to finish, then open the Roblox menu in the top-left corner of the screen. On PC you click it, and on a phone you tap the same spot.
- 2Select Captures to show the icon on the rightSelect Captures in the menu and a capture icon appears on the right side of the screen. The menu item shows or hides the icon each time you select it, so if the icon disappeared, select it once more. Tap or click the icon to start recording; a small indicator shows that recording is in progress, and selecting the icon again stops it. The official help lists no keyboard shortcut for this, so if pressing a key like F12 does nothing, that alone does not mean capture is broken.
- 3Test in a different experienceIf the icon is missing or nothing records in one experience only, join another experience and record about five seconds the same way. If it works there, the first experience's developer has likely turned off player capture. That setting belongs to the creator, so players have no way to turn it back on. If it fails everywhere, check that your device is officially supported (desktop or mobile) and that the app is up to date.
- 4Check the Captures tab for your clipAfter you stop recording, open the Captures tab at the top of the Roblox menu to see your videos and screenshots in a gallery. Tap a video to preview it in a carousel. If the clip is there, the capture itself worked and the problem is in the saving step. If the clip ends at 30 seconds, it simply hit the maximum length, which is not an error.
- 5Export to the PC Videos folder with the save iconOpen the clip in the gallery and tap the save icon. On desktop it goes to the Videos folder, and on a phone it goes to the camera roll. On Windows, open Videos in the left pane of File Explorer and sort by date modified to find the file you just exported. The help page doesn't name a subfolder, so if you don't see the file right away, search inside the Videos folder. Delete clips you don't need with the trash can icon on the same screen.
- 6Change how you record if you need sound and lengthIf 'no sound' or 'won't record past 30 seconds' remains after all of this, you are looking at the limits of the built-in capture. The official help states that voice chat and in-experience sounds are not recorded in video captures. Roblox's Screen Recording Additional Terms say that eligible users in select regions may be able to use recording features that include other users' voices and gameplay audio, but they do not say which regions. If you need sound and longer recordings, consider a recording program on PC, or your phone's own screen recorder on mobile.
Symptoms, causes and fixes (official help, checked October 14, 2026)
| Symptom | Cause | Fix or check |
|---|---|---|
| No capture icon on the right side of the screen | You are outside an experience, or the icon was hidden with the Captures menu item | Join an experience, open the top-left menu and select Captures to show the icon again. |
| You can't find the 'Record' tab from older guides | Those guides describe an older menu; the official page that still shows a Record tab is an old screenshot article not edited since November 2023 | Use Captures in the menu, as the current video help describes. No keyboard shortcut is documented. |
| Capture fails in one experience only | That experience's developer turned off player capture | Check whether it works in another experience. Players have no setting to turn it back on. |
| You recorded a clip but it isn't in any PC folder | Videos are saved to Roblox app storage first | Open the clip from the Captures tab and tap the save icon to export it to the Videos folder. |
| Recording stops at 30 seconds | The maximum length of a video capture is 30 seconds | This is by design. Use a PC recorder for longer footage. |
| The clip has no sound | Voice chat and in-experience sounds are not recorded by design | No setting to turn sound on is documented. Use another recording method if you need audio. |
| Clips vanished after deleting or reinstalling the app | The gallery in app storage is deleted along with the app | Only clips you exported earlier remain. From now on, export right after recording. |
Checklist so you don't lose a capture
- I opened the top-left menu while inside an experience (the app home has no capture icon).
- I selected Captures in the menu so the icon is showing on the right side of the screen.
- If it fails in one experience only, I tested another experience to see whether the developer setting is the cause.
- I opened my clips from the Captures tab and exported them with the save icon to the Videos folder or camera roll.
- I exported every clip I want to keep before deleting or reinstalling the app or switching devices.
- I confirmed my device is officially supported (desktop or mobile), and if I need sound or more than 30 seconds, I picked another way to record.
Keeping full length and sound on PC: DOR
The 30-second limit and the missing audio are part of how the built-in capture works, so no setting changes them. If you play Roblox on a Windows PC, a recording program can keep the whole session, and the free app DOR is one option. DOR automatically detects the PC version of Roblox downloaded from roblox.com. It starts recording when you join an experience and stops when you leave it, either by returning to the home screen or by closing Roblox. It is on by default, so there is no record button to press, and you can turn it off in DOR's settings. It records any experience regardless of genre or creator, each experience becomes one full-length mp4 in your library, and there is no length limit. Game audio and your microphone, with noise suppression, are recorded together by default, and depending on your settings you can capture only Roblox's sound instead of all desktop audio. Quality defaults to 1080p at 60fps and goes up to 2160p. If you join an experience right after launching Roblox, the first recording can start 15 to 20 seconds after you join. If digging through a long recording is a hassle, press F8 (you can change it) while recording inside an experience to save the last 30 seconds as a separate clip, with 15, 30, 45 or 60 seconds to choose from. See how to clip Roblox for how to use those hotkey clips. In the library you can trim a recording, export it in 16:9, 9:16 or 1:1, or share it as a dor.gg link. DOR is a Windows PC app, so it does not record Roblox on phones, tablets or consoles. If you play on a phone, follow how to record Roblox on your phone, and use DOR for the sessions you want to keep in full when you play on PC.
