Search for how to record or screen record Honkai Star Rail on PC and you will mostly find two kinds of trouble: the recording works but the picture is black, or the picture is fine but the video has no game sound or no character voices.
The in-game camera you open from the phone menu on PC takes photos only, so capturing a five star warp or a Memory of Chaos clear means using a PC recorder such as Xbox Game Bar, the NVIDIA app or OBS, or an automatic recorder like DOR. This guide sticks to PC recording.
It starts with a table of eight symptoms with their likely cause and fix, then tells you which to try first, walks through recording HSR with DOR and cutting a warp into a Short, and ends with a short checklist for your next session. Phone screen recording gets one quick answer in the FAQ.
Honkai Star Rail recording problems: 8 symptoms, causes and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| OBS Game Capture records a black screen | OBS is not running as administrator; this is the fix the official OBS guide gives for Honkai: Star Rail | Close OBS completely, right click the OBS shortcut, choose Run as administrator, then add Game Capture again |
| The recording goes black or cuts out when you switch to fullscreen or Alt+Tab | The capture loses the game window when the display mode changes | In the graphics settings, pick a resolution entry without Full Screen in its name to play windowed; if that fails, follow the fullscreen recording fix |
| Black screen only on a laptop | The game runs on the dedicated GPU while the recorder runs on the integrated one | In Windows Settings, System, Display, Graphics, set both the game and your recorder to the same high performance GPU |
| Colors look washed out in the recording | Windows HDR is on and the recorder saves a standard (SDR) video | Turn off Use HDR in the Windows display settings while you record |
| The video plays but there is no game sound | Your sound goes to earbuds or a headset while the recorder listens to a different output device | Set the same device in Windows and in your recorder's desktop audio; the full order is in no sound in game recording |
| Music plays but character voices are missing | The voice pack for your selected voice language was never downloaded or was removed | Open the Language tab in the game settings, check the voice language, download that pack and restart the game |
| Game audio drops sharply when a Discord call starts | Windows automatically lowers other sounds when it detects a call | In the classic Sound control panel, open the Communications tab and choose Do nothing |
| Crackling or static in the recording | Your mic picks up speaker sound again, or the device and the recorder use different sample rates | Use a headset and set both the device and the recorder to 48 kHz |
The short answer: fix the picture with permissions and display mode, fix the sound at the output device
Split the problem in two and it gets much easier. A black picture means the recorder never hooked the game, so if you use OBS, run it as administrator before anything else, then try windowed mode, then check the GPU assignment on a laptop.
If the picture is there but the colors look washed out, it is HDR. Missing sound is usually not the recorder's fault at all: plug in Bluetooth earbuds or switch headsets, leave the recorder alone, and the game plays through the new device while the recorder keeps listening to the old one.
If the soundtrack is there and only the voice lines are gone, that is the voice pack, and no recording setting will fix it. If checking all of this before every session sounds tiring, changing how you record is a fair option.
Three ways to record with no scenes or sources to set up are compared in how to record gameplay without OBS. The steps below use DOR, which starts recording on its own when the game launches.
Record HSR with DOR and turn a warp into a Short
- 1Install DOR and keep it updatedDOR is a free Windows app. Install it and sign in. Honkai: Star Rail is supported in the latest version, so accept the update prompt if you see one. After that, you just leave DOR running and launch the game.
- 2Check that Honkai: Star Rail is switched onIn DOR's settings, find Honkai: Star Rail in the per game recording list and make sure it is on. On a home PC it is on by default, so most people never touch it.
- 3Launch the game and play as usualWhen HSR starts, DOR detects it and records until you close the game, all in one video. When you Warp, do not press Skip during the animation and the whole sequence is captured, from the doors opening to the character reveal. Memory of Chaos and Apocalyptic Shadow runs need no record button either.
- 4Trim the part you want in My ClipsClose the game and the recording waits in My Clips in the DOR app. Mark just the warp where the five star appeared, or the Ultimate that finished the boss, and choose 9:16 to get a vertical clip ready for Shorts or TikTok. For framing tips, see how to crop a video to vertical 9:16.
- 5Polish it in DOR Studio and shareTo stitch several warps into one video, open DOR Studio (dor.gg/studio), merge the clips and add text, background music and effect templates such as Shake Zoom or a Glitch transition. Export an mp4 for YouTube Shorts and post the link on HoYoLAB, or send a dor.gg link your friends can play straight from a phone browser.
Before you record Honkai Star Rail
- Storage: the time HSR stays open becomes the length of the video. Use the game recording GB per hour table to estimate a long session, and keep recordings on a drive with room to spare.
- Audio device: if you switched headsets or earbuds, confirm that Windows and your recorder point at the same output device before you start.
- HDR: if your monitor runs in HDR, turning it off while you record keeps the colors close to what you see.
- Voice pack: playing with Japanese or Korean voices? Make sure that pack is still downloaded in the Language settings.
- Your voice: to talk over a run, make sure your mic is the default input device. Capturing game sound and your mic together is covered in how to record game sound and mic together.
Launch the game and it records: Honkai Star Rail with DOR
DOR is a free Windows app. Keep the latest version running, launch Honkai: Star Rail, and DOR detects the game and records everything until you close it, with the result waiting in My Clips.
There are no scenes or sources to build like in OBS, and your game sound and mic are captured together on one track. Trim any moment in the app to 16:9, 9:16 or 1:1.
In DOR Studio (dor.gg/studio) you can merge clips, change the aspect ratio, and add text, music, volume changes and effect templates, then export an mp4 or share a dor.gg link that plays right in a phone browser.
Storage stays tidy on its own: only when recordings pass the Full gameplay allowance (5 GB by default) are the oldest videos cleared, and your recent recordings and the ones you liked stay. If you also play Genshin Impact, cutting a wish animation into something you can send is covered in share Genshin Impact gameplay video.
