To take a screenshot in Roblox, open the menu at the top left while you are in an experience, select Captures, and click the capture icon that appears on the right side of the screen. Most people who cannot find their screenshots afterward run into the same thing: a capture does not go straight to a folder on your PC. It is stored in Roblox app storage first, and it only becomes a file in your Pictures folder (desktop) or camera roll (mobile) after you open the gallery and tap the save icon. This guide follows Roblox Help as checked on October 14, 2026, and walks through taking, viewing, exporting, and finding your screenshots on Windows, Mac, iPhone, and Android. Older advice you will see online, such as an F12 keybind or a Record tab in the menu, is either based on the old interface or not confirmed by any official Roblox document, so we keep those separate. If the capture icon on your screen gets in the way, see how to turn off the Roblox capture button.
Short answer: the file only appears after you press the save icon
Roblox’s current Captures feature splits taking a screenshot and saving it to your device into two steps. Clicking the capture icon keeps the image inside the gallery in Roblox app storage. Pressing the save icon in that gallery is what creates a file in the Pictures folder on desktop or the camera roll on mobile. Roblox Help names the Pictures folder but not a subfolder, so the fastest check is to look directly in Pictures and in any Roblox folder inside it. Anything you never saved to your device is deleted if you uninstall the Roblox app, so export what you want to keep before a reinstall. If you are looking for a keybind, the official article for the new Captures does not list one, and F12 is not confirmed in any official document. For a file from one key press, use the Windows shortcut Windows key + PrtScn, which saves the whole screen straight to Pictures > Screenshots, with your UI, chat, and name tags still in the shot. Video captures follow the same flow but are limited to 30 seconds and do not record voice chat or in-experience sound. If the video button is missing or clips will not save, see Roblox video capture not working, and for phone screen recording, see how to record Roblox on mobile.
How to take a capture and get it into a folder on PC or mobile
- 1Turn on the capture icon inside an experienceOnce you are in an experience, open the hamburger menu at the top left of the screen and select Captures. A capture icon appears on the right side of the screen. Selecting Capture in the same menu again hides or shows the icon. If Captures is missing or the icon never appears, the developer of that experience may have turned off player capture, so try another experience to compare.
- 2Click the capture icon to take the shotAt the moment you want, click the capture icon (tap it on a phone). The new Captures feature removes the in-experience UI and the names above avatars, so the image comes out clean. If you need health bars, chat, or names in the picture, Windows key + PrtScn or your phone’s own screenshot is the better fit. Video captures start from the same icon, run up to 30 seconds, and do not record voice chat or in-experience sound.
- 3Open the Captures gallery to view your shotsRoblox Help has you open the gallery from inside an experience. Join any experience, open the Roblox menu at the top left, and select Captures in the top menu to see what you have taken. Click one to open the carousel, where you can view it full size and swipe through the rest. Use the trash can icon here to delete shots you do not need.
- 4Export with the save iconWith the screenshot open in the carousel, tap the save icon. On desktop it goes to your Pictures folder; on mobile it goes to your camera roll (the Photos app on iPhone, the gallery on Android). Video captures go to the Videos folder on desktop. If saving fails on a phone, check in your device settings that the Roblox app is allowed to access photos.
- 5Open the Pictures folder on PCClick Pictures in the left pane of File Explorer, or press Windows key + R and type shell:My Pictures to open whatever folder Windows currently uses for Pictures. This also finds it when OneDrive folder backup has moved Pictures into your OneDrive. If the file is not directly inside, check the Roblox folder within it, and sort by Date modified so the newest file is on top. On a Mac, look in the Pictures folder in Finder.
- 6Export before you uninstall or reinstallThe gallery lives in Roblox app storage, so uninstalling the app deletes every screenshot and video you have not saved to your device. If you plan to reinstall Roblox to fix an error, open the gallery first and export everything you want to keep. The share icon that sends a capture straight to friends is only available on mobile for users 13 and older, so on PC, send the exported file through Discord or your usual messenger.
Where each Roblox screenshot method saves
| Method | Where it is saved | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| New Captures (screenshot) | Roblox app storage first; the save icon exports it to Pictures on desktop or the camera roll on mobile. | UI and names above avatars are removed. Anything not exported is deleted when you uninstall the app. |
| New Captures (video) | Roblox app storage first; the save icon exports it to Videos on desktop or the camera roll on mobile. | Up to 30 seconds, with no voice chat or in-experience sound. |
| Old method (Record tab or PrintScreen key) | A pop-up the first time tells you where it went. It is widely reported as a Roblox folder inside Pictures, but no official path is published. | Based on a help article not edited since November 2023. If your menu has no Record tab, use Captures. |
| Windows key + PrtScn (Windows feature) | Saved as a file straight to Pictures > Screenshots. | Captures the whole screen, so UI, chat, and names stay in. PrtScn alone copies to the clipboard or opens the Snipping Tool, depending on your Windows settings. |
| Mac shortcut (Command+Shift+3 or 4) | The desktop, under macOS default settings. | 3 takes the full screen, 4 lets you select an area. Roblox’s old help article lists the same keys. |
| Your phone’s own screenshot (button combo) | Photos app on iPhone, gallery on Android. | UI and names stay in. The button combination depends on your device. |
If your screenshot is not in the folder, check these
- I joined an experience and opened the gallery from Roblox menu > Captures to confirm the shot is there.
- I pressed the save icon on every capture I wanted to keep.
- On PC, I checked directly inside Pictures, the Roblox folder within it, and Videos for video captures.
- I ran shell:My Pictures to confirm whether OneDrive or another setting moved my Pictures folder.
- On my phone, the Roblox app has permission to access photos.
- I exported everything I want to keep before uninstalling or reinstalling Roblox.
When you need motion: record the whole experience on PC
DOR is not a screenshot tool. It is a PC recorder for when a single image is not enough and you want the movement and sound of the moment as well. Roblox’s built-in video capture tops out at 30 seconds and does not include voice chat or in-experience sound. DOR is a free Windows PC app that automatically detects the PC version of Roblox downloaded from roblox.com. When you join an experience, recording starts on its own, and when you leave the experience for the home screen or close Roblox, it stops on its own. This is on by default and can be switched off with the full-game recording toggle in DOR’s settings. Each experience is saved to your library as one full mp4 with no length limit. To keep just the moment that happened, press F8 (you can change the key) inside the experience and the last 30 seconds are saved as a separate clip; you can choose 15, 30, 45, or 60 seconds. Your microphone is recorded along with game sound by default. From the library you can trim a section and export it as 16:9, 9:16, or 1:1, share a dor.gg link, or open DOR Studio in your browser to merge videos and add text and background music before downloading an mp4. Right after you launch Roblox, the first experience can take about 15 to 20 seconds after you join before recording starts. DOR does not record Roblox on phones, tablets, or Mac, so for mobile players it is an option for when you play on a Windows PC. For recording past the 30-second cap, see how to record Roblox for longer than 30 seconds, and for saving the last few seconds with one key, see how to clip Roblox.
