The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt records automatically once DOR is installed: launch the game and the AI handles recording. There is no record button to press. From the moment you load a save and Geralt appears until you close the game, quests, fights, conversations and scenery all end up in one video. This guide covers the full routine in order: installing DOR, checking the recording, saving the moments that matter, finding them later, building a journey log and sharing it. Long main quests like the Bloody Baron stay unbroken, so you can always go back and see exactly which choice you made.
- Keep Geralt's journey on video from launch to exit, from the griffin hunt in White Orchard to the vineyards of Toussaint.
- Save the end of a monster contract, or a fight where Aard knocks an enemy down and Igni finishes it, as a separate clip.
- Use AI Voice Notes to find what you said while weighing an answer to the Bloody Baron and jump to that conversation.
- Combine a Gwent comeback in Novigrad and a sunset over the Skellige sea into a journey log.
Before you record The Witcher 3: install and recording mode
The Witcher 3 is GPU heavy, so playing at or above the recommended spec keeps both your in game frame rate and the recording stable. DOR is a free Windows app and never adds a watermark, so Skellige landscapes and Toussaint sunsets stay exactly as they look. The Witcher 3 uses full session recording, so travelling between regions and sitting through cutscenes does not break the video. It keeps going until you close the game. Graphics mods and quality of life mods record just the same. If you are worried about recording on top of high end graphics settings, read fixing FPS drops while recording first.
| Item | For The Witcher 3 | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Install | DOR, free Windows app | No watermark, so landscapes stay exactly as they look |
| Game version | Windows PC version on Steam | DOR records The Witcher 3 on your PC, with or without mods |
| Recording mode | Full session recording | One video from launch to exit, not cut by region travel or cutscenes |
| Hardware | GPU heavy game | At or above recommended spec, frame rate and recording both stay stable |
| Resolution and frame rate | 1080p at 30fps by default | 60fps for smoother combat, or the lighter 720p/30fps mode to cut the load |
| Storage | About 30MB for a 30 second 1080p clip | Leave plenty of drive space on days you binge the main story |
Record The Witcher 3 with DOR: step by step
- 1Install DORDownload and install DOR. It takes about a minute and is free. Leave it running afterwards, and there is nothing to set up each time you launch The Witcher 3.
- 2Launch The Witcher 3Start The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt from Steam and load your save. As soon as DOR detects the game, recording begins, so everything from the moment loading ends and Geralt stands in the world is captured.
- 3Check that recording is runningBefore you follow the first quest marker, glance at the DOR app once to confirm the recording. If nothing starts, follow what to do when the recorder does not detect your game. After that, read notice boards or play Gwent without a second thought.
- 4Clip right after the scene endsPress the clip save shortcut right after a griffin falls, right after you pick an answer in a story defining conversation, or right after you turn around the last round of Gwent. The last stretch is saved as a clip, so you never have to look for it in hours of footage.
- 5Quit and open My ClipsWhen the day's adventure is over, close the game. The full session and every clip you saved appear together in My Clips in the DOR app. The day you finished the Bloody Baron and the day you only played Gwent are filed the same way.
Find your recordings
Your recordings live in My Clips in the DOR app, also called the library. Each time you open and close The Witcher 3 becomes one session, and clips saved with the shortcut appear underneath it. To find a scene inside a long session, use region loading screens and quest completed notices as landmarks. For conversations, look for the stretch where the screen switches to cutscene framing. Set a start and an end point to trim what you need, then export as 16:9, 9:16 or 1:1. The full steps are in how to trim game clips. Like the videos you want to keep, such as your ending. When space fills up, older videos you have not liked are cleared first, so those stay.
Save the moments you want to keep
An open world RPG runs for hours once you start, so clipping the scenes you will rewatch on the spot is much easier. Press the clip save shortcut and the last stretch is saved as a clip. The default length is 30 seconds, and you can choose 15, 30, 45 or 60 seconds in settings. In The Witcher 3, good times to press it are right after a contract monster falls, right after Aard knocks an enemy down and Igni finishes the job, right after you choose a story defining answer, and right after you flip the last round of Gwent. Conversations run long, so 60 seconds catches the lines before the choice, while a single landscape shot only needs 15. See saving the last few seconds instantly for which length suits which moment.
Find what was said with AI Voice Notes
It is a single player story game, but you talk more when a big choice comes up. Lines like 'burn the Leshen's mark before the fight', 'drop Igni, keep Quen up and go in' and 'what happens if I pick this with the Baron' count, as do debates with your stream chat or strategy talk with a friend on Discord. DOR records game audio and your mic together, and AI Voice Notes writes those words onto the recording timeline as text. To revisit why you answered the Bloody Baron the way you did, find 'Baron' in the timeline text and select it to jump to that conversation. To get your mic right, see recording games with mic audio.
Build a montage with AI Highlight
When you finish a region's story, turn saved clips into a journey log. In the library, check the White Orchard griffin hunt, the Bloody Baron final choice, the Aard knockdown into Igni, the Gwent comeback in Novigrad and the sunset over the Skellige sea, then select AI Highlight. DOR joins them into one montage. Mixing fights and scenery gives you a short look back at Geralt's journey. To set the order yourself, see how to merge game clips.
Edit in DOR Studio
DOR Studio opens in your browser with nothing to install. Trim out the horseback travel, then lay music and a short caption over a Skellige sunset. Export it in 1:1 for an Instagram feed post. A punch zoom suits the moment a monster falls, and the handheld effect works well between a cutscene and a fight. Download the finished video as an mp4 or share it as a link straight away.
Share with a dor.gg link
Send trimmed moments as dor.gg links. Whoever opens one plays it in the browser without installing anything, so a friend who ended the same quest differently can see your outcome from one link on Discord. For a friend who has not reached that quest yet, send a contract fight instead of the ending and there is no spoiler risk. Tips on picking story choices and monster contract scenes are in sending Witcher 3 gameplay videos.
The Witcher 3 recommended settings and troubleshooting
The Witcher 3 is GPU heavy, so matching recording settings to your hardware matters. At or above recommended spec, start with the default 1080p at 30fps, and switch to 60fps if you want fights full of Signs and swordplay to look smoother. On a PC with little frame headroom, use the 720p/30fps mode to cut the load. DOR uses GPU hardware encoding, so recording has only a small effect on your frame rate. Fullscreen, windowed and borderless windows all record, so keep the game's display settings as they are. Sessions in this game run long, so also read recording long gameplay without stutter. DOR has no cheat features and never touches your game files, saves or mods.
| Symptom | What to check | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Fullscreen records as a black screen | The game's display mode and the capture method | Switch to borderless, or follow [fixing fullscreen recording](fullscreen-recording-not-working) to change to monitor capture. |
| Dialogue or music is missing | Your Windows output device and DOR audio settings | Confirm which device the game plays through, then work through [fixing game recordings with no sound](game-recording-no-sound-fix). |
| Frame rate drops in big cities like Novigrad | Recording resolution, frame rate and in game graphics | Drop to 720p/30fps mode and lower the in game graphics preset one step. |
| Unsure whether a modded game will record | How DOR works | DOR records the game screen as it is, so graphics and quality of life mods record the same, and DOR never touches mod files. |
