VRChat records automatically once DOR is installed: launch the game and the AI handles the rest. Unlike OBS, there are no scenes or sources to set up. Start VRChat on your PC and DOR detects it, keeping everything from waiting for friends in your home world to every world you portal into and the conversations that run until sunrise, all in one video until you close the game. Game audio and your microphone are recorded together, so the joke someone made at 3am is there to replay later. This guide covers installing DOR, finding moments in long hangouts, making a vlog and sharing politely.
- Keep hours of world hopping through portals in one continuous video.
- Save an avatar reveal in front of the mirror or the moment you found a hidden room as separate clips.
- Use AI Voice Notes to find instance chat like 'the concert in this world starts at ten' and jump to that scene.
- Combine an avatar reveal, a club world live set and the 3am quote of the night into a weekly VRChat vlog.
- Send the live set clip to everyone who was there with a single dor.gg link in Discord.
Before you record VRChat: install and recording mode
VRChat is fairly light, so getting ready to record is simple. DOR is a free Windows app and never adds a watermark. VRChat uses full session recording, which means the video keeps running through every world change and loading screen until you close the game. Most of the fun in VRChat footage comes from voices, so before you join, check that your mic and game audio both come through with recording games with mic audio. The table below lists what is worth knowing before your first VRChat recording.
| Item | For VRChat | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Install | DOR, free Windows app | No OBS style scenes or sources to build, and no watermark |
| Game version | VRChat running on your PC, for example from Steam | DOR records the VRChat view and audio shown on your PC monitor |
| Recording mode | Full session recording | One video from join to exit, not split when you change worlds |
| Audio | Game audio and your mic recorded together | Friends' voices in the instance land in the same video |
| Resolution and frame rate | 1080p at 30fps by default | 60fps is available, plus a lighter 720p/30fps mode |
| Per game recording toggle | Turn VRChat on or off in DOR settings | Switch it off on nights you do not want recorded |
Record VRChat with DOR: step by step
- 1Install DORDownload DOR and install it. Setup takes about a minute and the app is free. Leave DOR running afterwards. You do not need to press a record button every time a friend sends you an invite.
- 2Launch VRChat on your PCStart VRChat on your PC as usual. Recording begins as soon as DOR detects the game, so the loading screen before your home world appears is expected at the start of the video.
- 3Check that recording is runningWhen you arrive in your home world, glance at the DOR app once to confirm the recording is in progress. If the game is not picked up, follow what to do when the recorder does not detect your game. After that, take any portal you like without thinking about it.
- 4Clip it right after the laughRight after a friend reveals a new avatar at the mirror, or right after everyone cracks up in a late night chat, press the clip save shortcut. The last 30 seconds are stored as a separate clip, so you will not have to scrub through hours of hangout footage later.
- 5Quit and open My ClipsWhen the hangout ends and you close VRChat, the full session video plus every clip you saved appear together in My Clips in the DOR app. An instance that ran until morning is kept the same way.
Find your recordings
Your recordings live in My Clips in the DOR app, also called the library. Each time you open and close VRChat becomes one session, and anything you saved with the clip save shortcut appears as its own clip. To find a moment in a long hangout, use the loading screen that appears whenever you change worlds as a divider. The recording splits into world sized chunks, so remembering which world it happened in is usually enough. Glancing at the clock when everyone laughs makes it faster still. Set a start and an end point to trim what you need, then export as 16:9, 9:16 or 1:1. The full walkthrough is in how to trim game clips. Like the videos you want to keep, such as the night you first met your group. When space fills up, older videos you have not liked are cleared first, so liked videos stay.
Save the moments you want to keep
Even with the whole hangout recorded, saving the moments you will rewatch on the spot makes them far easier to find. Press the clip save shortcut and the last stretch becomes a clip. The default length is 30 seconds, and you can pick 15, 30, 45 or 60 seconds in settings. In VRChat, good moments to press it are right after a new avatar reveal, right after a mirror group photo, and right after a friend's joke sets everyone off. Longer scenes such as a club world live set or a full body tracking dance fit better with the clip length set to 60 seconds. To change the shortcut, see saving the last few seconds instantly.
Find what was said with AI Voice Notes
Instances run on lines like 'rate my new avatar, just uploaded it', 'come to the mirror, group photo' and 'I'll invite you to my friend's instance'. DOR records game audio and your microphone together, and AI Voice Notes writes instance conversations onto the recording timeline as text. To find who suggested switching worlds or what line got everyone laughing, search the timeline text for a word you remember and select it to jump to the scene. An all night chat ends up reading like a transcript. If you also keep a Discord call open while you hang out, see recording Discord call audio.
Build a montage with AI Highlight
A night of hanging out has a lot of world loading and waiting around. In the library, check your clips of the new avatar reveal, the mirror group photo, the club world live set, the hidden room, the full body tracking dance and the 3am quote of the night, then select AI Highlight. DOR runs them in order as a short VRChat vlog, a good way to wrap up a week of hangouts in one video. To set the order yourself, see how to merge game clips.
Edit in DOR Studio
DOR Studio opens in your browser with nothing to install. Trim the part where your avatar is center frame, switch to 9:16 and punch zoom the face. Add friends' names and the world name as text with a background track and the TikTok cut is ready. A shake zoom on the beat during a live set and a glitch transition when the world changes keep the vlog flowing. Framing tips for vertical video are in recording games for vertical Shorts. Download the result as an mp4 or share it as a link right away.
Share with a dor.gg link
Send trimmed moments as dor.gg links. Whoever opens the link plays it in the browser without installing anything, so everyone who was there can watch straight from Discord. VRChat footage includes other people's voices and avatars, so ask the people who were there before posting to a group chat or public social media. Tips on picking scenes from hangout recordings and sharing etiquette are in sharing VRChat videos.
VRChat recommended settings and troubleshooting
VRChat is fairly light, so recording runs smoothly even at minimum spec. The default 1080p at 30fps keeps avatars and worlds sharp, and 60fps makes dances and live sets smoother. If a crowded world pushes your PC, drop to the 720p/30fps mode. DOR records the VRChat view shown on your PC monitor, so when the in game camera view is up on your desktop it is captured too. Fullscreen, windowed and borderless windows all record, and GPU hardware encoding keeps the frame rate impact small. For hangouts that last until dawn, see recording long gameplay without stutter. DOR has no cheat features and never touches game files or avatar data.
| Symptom | What to check | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| My own voice is missing | Your Windows input device and DOR mic settings | Make sure the mic you use in VRChat is also selected in DOR, then follow [fixing a mic that is not recording](mic-not-recording-fix). |
| The recording is a black screen | How the VRChat window is displayed | DOR records fullscreen, windowed and borderless alike. If it is still black, follow [fixing fullscreen recording](fullscreen-recording-not-working) to switch to monitor capture. |
| Stutter in crowded worlds | Recording resolution and frame rate | GPU hardware encoding keeps the impact small, but if your PC still struggles, drop to 720p/30fps mode. |
| A hangout you do not want recorded | Per game recording in DOR settings | Turn off full session recording for VRChat in settings, then switch it back on before the next hangout. |
| Worried a recorder could affect your account | How DOR works | DOR only captures the screen, has no cheat features and does not modify game files or play data. |
