ACE COMBAT 8: WINGS OF THEVE records automatically once DOR is installed: launch the game and the AI handles the rest. From the moment you pick an aircraft in the main menu until you quit, story scenes between missions, takeoff, dogfights and RTB run together in one video, so there is no record button to remember before a sortie. However many times you retry a mission, every attempt is kept, which lets you pick the cleanest flight. This guide walks through the full routine in order: getting ready, confirming the recording, saving kills, finding scenes in footage that is mostly sky, building montages and shorts, and sharing links.
- Keep every sortie from the session in one video, retries included, from aircraft select to the last RTB.
- Save a hard turn onto a bandit's tail or a missile dodge under lock as its own clip right away.
- Find cockpit chatter like 'missile alert, diving and breaking' with AI Voice Notes and jump to that turn.
- Join a low run through a canyon and a one on one with a named ace into an air combat montage with AI Highlight.
- Cut a close range guns kill into a 9:16 short and send it to a fellow series fan with a dor.gg link.
Before you record Ace Combat 8: install and recording mode
Ace Combat 8 is GPU heavy, so a PC at the recommended spec or above keeps both in game frame rate and recording stable. DOR is a free Windows app and never adds a watermark. The game uses full session recording, which means that whether you play missions back to back or retry the same one several times, the video keeps going until you close the game. Mission marathons make long recordings, so for steady multi hour capture see recording long gameplay without stutter. The table below covers what to check before your first recording.
| Item | For Ace Combat 8 | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Install | DOR, free Windows app | No watermark on recordings or edits |
| Game version | Windows PC version on Steam | DOR records Ace Combat 8 running on your PC |
| Recording mode | Full session recording | Story scenes, sorties and retries stay in one video until you exit |
| Display mode | Fullscreen, windowed and borderless all record | If game capture is blocked, DOR switches to monitor capture |
| Resolution and frame rate | 1080p at 30fps by default | With headroom, 1080p at 60fps keeps hard turns smooth, or use the light 720p/30fps mode |
| Audio | Game audio and mic recorded together | Engine noise, lock warnings and your voice share one video |
Record Ace Combat 8 with DOR: step by step
- 1Install DORDownload DOR and install it. Once setup finishes, DOR waits in the background for the game to start. If you are starting the campaign, install it before launching so your first sortie is on record.
- 2Launch Ace Combat 8Start ACE COMBAT 8: WINGS OF THEVE from Steam as usual. Recording begins as soon as DOR detects the game, so the title, main menu and aircraft select at the start of the video are expected.
- 3Check that recording is runningBefore the first takeoff, glance at the DOR app once to confirm the recording is in progress. If the game is not picked up, follow what to do when the recorder does not detect your game. After that, restarting a mission keeps everything in the same video.
- 4Save the clip right after the splashPulled a hard turn onto a bandit's six and landed the missile, or slipped one with flares and maneuvering while the lock warning screamed? Press the clip save shortcut right after. The last 30 seconds are stored as a separate clip.
- 5Quit and open My ClipsClose the game and the whole session lands in My Clips as one video, with the clips you saved alongside. Every attempt at a mission you retried is in that same video.
Find your recordings
Your recordings collect in My Clips in the DOR app, also called the library. Each time you open and close Ace Combat 8 becomes one session, and anything you grabbed with the clip save shortcut appears as its own clip. Footage that is mostly sky and cloud makes boundaries hard to see, so treat the takeoff, where your aircraft climbs after the menus and story scenes, as the start of each mission. If you remember which mission it was, count takeoffs to jump straight there. Glancing at your phone's clock when you land a kill you like lets you skip a few seconds at a time near that point and find it fast. Set a start and an end point to trim, then export as 16:9, 9:16 or 1:1. Keep a single kill to 5 to 15 seconds, from the turn where the chase begins to a second or two after the splash, and give a chase through the clouds around 30 seconds. The walkthrough is in how to trim game clips. Like the videos you want to keep, such as downing a named ace. When space fills up, older videos you have not liked are cleared first.
Save the moments you want to keep
Dogfights end in seconds, with long stretches of cruising in between, so pressing the clip save shortcut right after a kill or dodge is the habit that pays off most. The default length is the last 30 seconds, and you can choose 15, 30, 45 or 60 seconds in settings. A guns kill up close or a one missile splash fits in 15 seconds, while a hard turn onto a bandit's tail suits 30 so the turn is included. Maneuver heavy moments like a low run through a canyon or a post stall reversal work at 45, and a drawn out one on one with a named ace is best saved at 60 seconds right after the kill. To change the shortcut or length, see saving the last few seconds instantly.
Find what was said with AI Voice Notes
With a lock warning screaming, lines like 'missile alert, diving and breaking', 'save the special weapon for the next flight' and 'finishing with guns, closing in' come out on their own. DOR records game audio and your microphone together, and AI Voice Notes writes what you said onto the recording timeline like a flight log. To rewatch the moment you shouted 'this ace's maneuvering is insane', select that line in the timeline and jump right there. Maneuver tips you gave stream chat sit right next to that turn too. To balance your voice against the engine noise, see recording games with mic audio.
Build a montage with AI Highlight
Once kill clips pile up, build an air combat montage. In the library, check the hard turn onto a bandit's tail, dodging a missile under lock, the low run through a canyon, the post stall maneuver reversal, the guns kill up close and downing a named ace, then select AI Highlight to join them into one video. Flights from different missions blend together naturally. You can also sort by aircraft and keep only the kills from one plane. To set the order yourself, see how to merge game clips.
Edit in DOR Studio
DOR Studio opens in your browser with nothing to install. Trim away the cruising, add a punch zoom on the frame where the enemy jet goes up and a shake zoom on a hard break away from a missile. Bridge missions with a glitch transition, put the aircraft or mission name on screen as text and lay background music underneath for an air combat montage. From the same clips you can export a 16:9 montage and a 9:16 splash short. To keep the jet in frame on a vertical cut, see recording games for vertical Shorts. When you are done, download an mp4 or share it as a link straight away.
Share with a dor.gg link
Send trimmed moments as dor.gg links. Whoever opens the link watches in a browser without the app, so a fellow Ace Combat fan can watch your named ace takedown from a Discord message in seconds. Splash shorts go up on YouTube, TikTok or Reels with no watermark in the corner. If a clip includes story scenes, check how far your friend has played first. Where to cut kills and dodges is covered in sharing Ace Combat 8 kill videos.
Ace Combat 8 recommended settings and troubleshooting
Ace Combat 8 is GPU heavy, so start recording at the default 1080p and 30fps, and move to 1080p at 60fps when you have headroom so fast turns and cloud flights stay smooth. If your spec is tight, the 720p/30fps mode is the lightest. DOR uses GPU hardware encoding, so its effect on frame rate is small. Fullscreen, windowed and borderless windows all record, so keep your usual display settings. If frames drop only while recording, start with fixing FPS drops while recording. DOR has no cheat features and never touches game files or save data.
| Symptom | What to check | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| The recording is a black screen | The game's display mode | DOR records fullscreen, windowed and borderless alike. If it is still black, follow [fixing fullscreen recording](fullscreen-recording-not-working) to switch to monitor capture. |
| Engine noise and warnings are missing | Your Windows output device and DOR audio settings | Confirm which device the game plays through, then work through [fixing game recordings with no sound](game-recording-no-sound-fix). |
| Frames drop in cloud flights while recording | Recording frame rate and graphics load | GPU hardware encoding keeps the impact small, but if it struggles, keep recording at 30fps or use 720p/30fps mode. |
| Kills are hard to find in footage that is all sky | Takeoffs and the times you noted | Count missions by takeoff and skip around the time you noted, then save a clip right after each kill next time. |
| Worried recording could affect your save | How DOR works | DOR only captures the screen and never modifies game files or save data. |
