Don't Starve Together records automatically once DOR is installed: launch the game and the AI handles recording. There is no record button to press. From the moment you join your friend's server until you close the game, every day of chopping trees, building base and getting through winter ends up in one video. This guide takes you through the routine in order: installing DOR, checking the recording, saving boss fights and survival moments, finding them later, building a survival log and sharing it. Rewinding to see who set the base on fire, or where winter prep fell apart, is also the easiest way to avoid repeating it next world.
- Keep dozens of in game days on video for as long as you are connected to the server.
- Save your first winter Deerclops kill, a hound wave defense or the pointless moment a friend turns into a ghost as separate clips.
- Use AI Voice Notes to find plans like 'make a thermal stone before winter' and jump straight to that day.
- Combine a base tour, a Dragonfly kill and surviving winter into one survival log video.
Before you record Don't Starve Together: install and recording mode
Don't Starve Together is light on hardware, so running a recorder next to it is simple. DOR is a free Windows app and never adds a watermark, which makes it handy for a survival log series. DST uses full session recording, so the video keeps going through every in game day and every trip into the caves until you close the game. Sessions often run for hours once you join, so read recording long gameplay without stutter ahead of time. The table below lists what is worth knowing before your first DST recording.
| Item | For Don't Starve Together | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Install | DOR, free Windows app | No watermark, so videos work as a survival log series as they are |
| Game version | Windows PC version on Steam | DOR records Don't Starve Together running on your PC |
| Recording mode | Full session recording | One video from launch to exit, not split by in game day or cave trips |
| Audio | Game audio and mic recorded together | Barking hounds and your group's strategy talk are both kept |
| Resolution and frame rate | 1080p at 30fps by default | 60fps is available, plus a lighter 720p/30fps mode |
| Storage | About 30MB for a 30 second 1080p clip | Leave plenty of drive space on weekends you spend on the server |
Record Don't Starve Together with DOR: step by step
- 1Install DORDownload and install DOR. It takes about a minute and is free. Leave it running afterwards, and there is nothing to set up each time a friend opens the server.
- 2Launch Don't Starve TogetherStart Don't Starve Together from Steam, join a server and pick a character. As soon as DOR detects the game, recording begins, so whether you are Wilson or Wendy, everything from picking grass and twigs on day one is captured.
- 3Check that recording is runningBefore you light your first campfire, glance at the DOR app once to confirm the recording. If nothing starts, follow what to do when the recorder does not detect your game. After that, worry only about hunger and sanity.
- 4Clip right after something happensWhen Deerclops goes down, when you hold off a hound wave at base, or when a friend becomes a ghost for no good reason, press the clip save shortcut. The last 30 seconds are saved as a clip, so you never have to dig through days of footage.
- 5Quit and open My ClipsWhen you finish for the day, close the game. The full session and every clip you saved show up together in My Clips in the DOR app. The day you made it through winter and the day everyone became a ghost are filed the same way.
Find your recordings
Your recordings live in My Clips in the DOR app, also called the library. Each time you open and close DST becomes one session, and clips saved with the shortcut appear underneath it. To find a specific day inside a long session, use the day clock and season marker in the top right as your guide, and split days by the stretches where night falls and the screen goes dark. Set a start and an end point to trim the part you need, then export it as 16:9, 9:16 or 1:1. The full steps are in how to trim game clips. Like the videos you want to keep, such as the day you got through your first winter. When space fills up, older videos you have not liked are cleared first, so your liked survival history stays.
Save the moments you want to keep
In a survival game, the big moments arrive without warning. Even with the whole session recorded, saving a clip on the spot spares you from searching dozens of days later. Press the clip save shortcut and the last stretch is saved as a clip. The default length is 30 seconds, and you can choose 15, 30, 45 or 60 seconds in settings. In DST, good times to press it are right after Deerclops or Dragonfly falls, right after you hold off a hound wave, right after a friend dies or gets revived, and right after a Crock Pot dish comes out wrong. For long boss fights, set 60 seconds so the final exchanges are included. A short accident like turning into a ghost only needs 15. See saving the last few seconds instantly for which length suits which moment.
Find what was said with AI Voice Notes
DST is usually played with a Discord call open, so lines like 'hounds incoming, everyone back to base', 'I'm a ghost, someone revive me' and 'don't put monster meat in the Crock Pot' never stop. DOR records game audio and your mic together, and AI Voice Notes writes your group's survival plans onto the recording timeline as text. Find who was on wood duty, or what you agreed to bring before a boss fight, in the timeline text and select it to jump straight to the scene. Whoever kept putting off winter prep is on record too. To capture your friends' voices as well, see recording Discord call audio.
Build a montage with AI Highlight
If your world lasted a long time, turn your saved clips into a survival log. In the library, check the Deerclops kill, the hound wave defense, the base tour, the Dragonfly kill and surviving winter, then select AI Highlight. DOR joins them into one montage. Add the everyone's a ghost clip at the end, and the video shows how that world finished too. If you want to split runs by character and compare them, see how to merge game clips to set the order yourself.
Edit in DOR Studio
DOR Studio opens in your browser with nothing to install. Add a shake zoom where Deerclops smashes your base and drop a day count like 'Day 21' on top as text. Merge scenes from several days over a music track and the survival log is done, and glitch transitions fit nicely where one season turns into the next. Export a base tour in 9:16 and it fits Shorts. Download the finished video as an mp4 or share it as a link straight away.
Share with a dor.gg link
Send trimmed moments as dor.gg links. The person you send it to plays it in the browser without installing anything, so just post the boss kill link in your Discord channel for everyone who survived on that server. Friends who could not log on that night can see what happened from the same link. Tips on choosing scenes from winter survival to total party wipes are in sending Don't Starve Together boss videos, and posting to Discord is covered in sharing clips on Discord.
Don't Starve Together recommended settings and troubleshooting
Don't Starve Together is a hand drawn style 2D game, so the default 1080p at 30fps already captures your base and the monsters clearly. If you want dodges in boss fights to look smoother, switch to 60fps. If you stay connected for hours on a laptop, the 720p/30fps mode keeps the load low. Fullscreen, windowed and borderless windows all record, so keep the game's display settings as they are. DOR uses GPU hardware encoding, so its effect on your frame rate is small. The longer you stay on, the bigger the files, so for balancing quality and size see reducing game recording file size. DOR has no cheat features and never touches your game files or server data.
| Symptom | What to check | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Friends' voices or game sound are missing | Your Windows output device and DOR audio settings | Confirm which device the game and Discord play through, then work through [fixing game recordings with no sound](game-recording-no-sound-fix). |
| The recording is a black screen | The game's display mode and the capture method | Try borderless, or follow [fixing fullscreen recording](fullscreen-recording-not-working) to switch to monitor capture. |
| The picture stutters during a hound wave | Recording resolution and frame rate | GPU hardware encoding keeps the impact small, but if your PC still struggles, drop to 720p/30fps mode. |
| Days of sessions fill up the drive | Free drive space | Save the scenes you want as clips, and leave watched sessions unliked so they are cleared first when space fills up. |
